UA FOOTBALL NEWS
WEEK OF JUNE 28TH
Signee Grades, Qualified or Not???
So for Bama only has three of their 30 signees, who will not be
eligible.
1) Mario Monds, a 6-5, 340 defensive tackle from Hutchinson
Junior College in Kansas.
2) Aires Monroe, a 6-3, 220 linebacker from Godby High School in
Tallahassee, Fla.
3) Johnovan Morgan, a 6-4, 265-pound tight end from Carroll City
High School in Miami, Fla.
Aires Monroe was expected not to qualify, but Mario Monds will be a loss
for the Tide, Coach Mike DuBose was expecting a lot from the Junior
College players that they signed this year.
"Mick's Rumor Mill"
Hi all. Mick Chang here letting you
know that thanks to JP, I can voice what I hear about our beloved Bama
program in this here newsletter. Those of you who have followed my posts
on Bamafan and in the now defunct Bama_Club listservs know that not
every rumour I post turns out right, and not every rumour turns out
wrong. Don't take what I post as gospel. Even the most inside of infos
are speculations sometimes.
I am a charter member of the Bamafan list (since April 1994). And I
chose not to participate in fee-charging services like tiderinsider or
bamaonline because I don't believe in charging people for info relating
to Bama. That's not to say that those services are not valuable
resources.
It's been pretty quiet news and rumour-wise since we are in the Summer
months. The coaches won't convene until late-July like they always do to
prepare for Fall practices. I'll ad lib on some of the stuff that has
already been posted in some form or another.
* We all know about the coaches being fired. Woody McCorvey landed in
South Carolina. Bruce Arians is back in the NFL. Danny Pearman is at
Virginia Tech. And Curly Hallman? Last I heard Curly is investing all
the money he made in coaching into business. Curly has some interesting
business partners like Jackie Sherrill and Danny Ford. Jackie sold his
car dealership in Houston when he moved to Starkville, and it's rumoured
that Curly and Jackie are looking into buying a dealership. And Danny
has always liked trucking companies. I seriously doubt Curly will get
back into coaching. Someone else prove me wrong.
* All the talk about our incoming recruiting class always circle around
Tyler Watts. So is Charlie Stubbs banking his future at Bama on Tyler?
Stubbs isn't that stupid. Stubbs has been rumoured to keep in contact
with several California JC prospects that he knew of back at BYU. So
what should be read into this? Does Stubbs have no confidence in Tyler
that he has to hedge his bet into the JC ranks? Maybe, and maybe not.
But it is unrealistic to put so much expectations on one 19 year-old
kid. And Stubbs is doing his job to consider the alternatives if Watts
doesn't pan out.
* Watts' performance at the All-Star game sucked. That reminds me of
another QB who had a sucky performance at the All-Star game 3 years ago
-- Tee Martin, who will start for Tennessee next season.
* Bama's academic casualties thus far are Mario Monds (OL), Aires Monroe
(LB), and Johnovan Morgan (TE). And Corey Kinnebrew. I get 2 stories on
Corey. Corey is either on academic suspension, or is kicked out of the
University for low grades.
Contrary to most belief,
Shontua Ray (RB) has not been cleared academically. At this time, Ray is
still on the bubble, and we are still one over the 25 scholarships
available. With Johnovan Morgan ineligible, that makes Bama 3 for 3 on
signing ineligible TE's in the past 3 years. 3 years ago, it was Gorman
Thornton. 2 years ago, it was Marlon Davis. And Johnovan Morgan
completes the trio. What is it with TE's and academics?
* The lack of a quality TE will play into the offense that Callaway and
Stubbs is designing. Don't expect the TE to be much of a receiver in the
new offense -- not that the TE was much of a receiver before.
* So what has the "Snake" been doing to prepare for his color
commentator position in the upcoming season? He took his family to Utah
for skiing of course. When asked if he got any inside info on BYU, the
Snake replied, "Well, I didn't
realize that Mormons couldn't drink. I guess that could work against
them when they face the rowdy crowd at Legion Field..."
Additionally,
There have been rumours that Arkansas has been talking with the Big 12
about joining, and leaving the SEC. I'll leave that as straight rumour
and nothing else.

Alabama-Mississippi High School All-Star Game Recap
written by: JP of Alabama Game Day
(http://come.to/ALGameDay.com)
The Alabama Mississippi All Star game was handicapped by rain, the
weather played a major part in the amount of passing that both teams
did. The Mississippi All-Stars grinded out 195 yards on the ground to
give them a 9-0 victory. Tyler Watts the Alabama All-Star QB only
threw the ball six times for 16 yards. Watts was never able to get any
kind of rhythm due to having to split time with Gabe Gross (Auburn
Signee). Watts looked impressive on several passes, but really never had
an opportunity to show the fans all he could do.
Other Bama Signees
Shontua Ray looked very impressive. This guy can flat out run he had
45 yards on just over 10 carries. He showed everyone that he could run
with power as well as speed; on several plays Ray would run over
defenders. If he qualifies watch out, this guy could be GREAT!!!
Reggie Myles (Mississippi All-Star) was very impressive. He is a
great Mike DuBose player, he plays with a lot of intensity. Myles laid a
hit on the opening kick off that set the tone for the rest of the game
for the Mississippi. I can't wait to see this guy in Crimson and White!
Bart Raulston is BIG, that's really all I could tell from him,
the Alabama All-Star line was not that great.
Freddie Milons played the quarterback position for the
Mississippi All-Stars. He looked to be a great player with good speed
and quickness, but will play wide receiver for the Tide.
Marvin Constant had a good game he block well, and when he had
the chance to run the ball he seemed to run with power but the O-Line
didn't provide him any blocking.
Darius Gilbert looked outstanding he knocked away several passes
and was all over the place. This guy should be able to contribute to the
Tide in '98.
It was hard to judge any of these players in this game but I feel some
will turn a few heads when 3-a-day practices start August 14th.
Kentucky-Tennessee All Star Game Recap (Bama Signees)
written by: Lee Baker
Well, after returning from the game on Friday night, here are my
opionions of the the players that I saw.
Victor Ellis had a very good game with a fumble returned for a
touchdown, an interception, and a pass breakup that was a near
interception and touchdown had he caught it. He is up to 225 lbs. now
and was playing strong safety in this game, but will move to linebacker
at Alabama.
Ahmad Galloway is a solid player who did not get much of a chance
to perform due to players splitting time, but had a couple of nice runs.
He is a Dennis Riddle clone, and wore number 29 in this game and will
wear it at BAMA. Nice runner between the tackles.
Eric Locke is an incredible athlete who is very well put together
to only be 5'9". He has incredible moves and lateral qucikness much
like David Palmer. He is not someone you would look forward to facing in
the open field. Tough for one player to bring down.
All these young men are VERY nice and are outstanding people, most of
all they are VERY happy to be attending the University of Alabama. They
will represent THE University very well.

SOUND CHECK
QUOTES FROM FANS, COACHES AND
PLAYERS
Head Coach Mike DuBose on the QB situation:
"I don't see what we have as a quarterback controversy, it's a
matter of who is one, two and three. Right now, I don't know. You can't
make any real determination with just 15 days of spring practice.... We
won't make that decision until a week to 10 days before the BYU
game."
Offensive Coordinator Neil Callaway on the QB situation:
"The only thing you can say about the quarterback situation, is
that it's wide open."
Head Coach Mike DuBose on Tyler Watts:
"He's not our saviour, he's not going to be the difference-maker
this season, but he'll be an outstanding quarterback one day."
Bama Signee ShontUA Ray
''I want to play, but if I can't, I will go on in and try to get ahead
in my studies so I can play as a sophomore. I've got myself on track
now. I know where I'm headed.
Head Coach Mike DuBose on the future
"I'm excited about the direction we're going in, I wish I could
tell you I'm excited about where we are right now, but I'm not. I think
we're a year away from being a good football team. I think we're one
recruiting class away rom being a real good football team."
"If we can recruit well, we can get it back to where people expect
it to be, that's as one of the four or five who are mentioned for the
national championship every year when the season starts. "If
anybody mentions us right now for the national championship, something's
wrong with them. You better check what they're smoking or doing because
we're not close to being that kind of football team."
Dennis "Soup" Campbell's Obligatory Bama Comment
"I LOVE BAMA !!! "
And all Bama's people said....
AMEN!!!
