Big A Bullpen help arrives from BSC

The veritable destruction of Birmingham-Southern's baseball program appears to have netted the Tide a capable lefty reliever in transfer Will Stroup, a 6'0/172 Oak Mountain High School product. As a sophomore in 2006, Stroup served as the Panthers' closer, posting a 2-2/3.37 mark with six saves. He allowed just 21 hits over 34.2 innings of work, holding opponents to a paltry .181 average. He fanned a respectable total of 27, but those 24 walks are somewhat troubling. Stroup is currently pitching for the Northwoods League's Wisconsin Woodchucks, where he is 0-1/5.48 with 5 saves in 15 appearances. Despite racking up 26 Ks in 21.1 IP, he's been hurt by having issued 16 free passes.

While it would have been nice to have nabbed one of BSC's two departing stars (LHP Blake Martin is headed to LSU, CF Mark Goforth to Mississippi State), at least Alabama was able to derive some benefit from the sad dismantling of what was one of the state's upstart programs. Stroup should be a nice addition to a Tide bullpen that figures to be in need of lefties. He'll have to get that walk rate down, but he's still relatively young and has plenty of time for improvement.
