Upcoming draft / Rebuilding for 2010

Share

I was wondering what everyone's thoughts were on the upcoming MLB draft. How many of our guys will be drafted? I think we have a few guys with a real shot being drafted, and eventually making it to the majors? It appears that next year will be a rebuilding year.

Has anyone heard anything on recruiting? We are going to have several holes to fill, and I have not heard antything this year.

Any information would be appreciated.

Re: Upcoming draft / Rebuilding for 2010

We were going to have a lot of holes to fill be virtue of graduation. Of the guys that may leave early it could be the likes of Brandon and Jake. Everyone else I imagine will be back.

There will be guys that leave to go elsewhere also. Those guys I have no idea who might be.

We will need a real shot in the arm with some young guys coming through and transfers/freshman making an impact to stay as competitive as we were this year. IMO next will be down in comparison to this year, but with Ross, Josh, Taylor, and Clay back, along Cody T. we still should be able to score some runs. Obviously the pitching staff needs some work done.

Next years team should be able to compete in my opinion. I'm always optimistic though.

Re: Upcoming draft / Rebuilding for 2010

Although his stock has plummeted over the past month, someone is bound to take Del Howell at some point in the hopes that he rebounds with a strong summer and "pulls a David Robertson."

Jake could stand to benefit from returning. His value will likely be suppressed right now due to injury concerns, and if he can follow in the footsteps of Kent Matthes and as a senior develop some semblance of plate discipline - his only truly glaring weakness (6 walks and 45 K's is just awful) - he could rocket up the draft boards in 2010.

There's also a good chance that May returns. The offense is certainly intriguing, but fielding will keep his stock suppressed. His bat profiles best at second, but whether he can handle the position at the pro level is another question altogether. If he's limited to first base or left field, he won't have anywhere near as much value.

Austin Evans has some serious command issues, but he does throw gas. Some organization might take a chance with him based simply on velocity and try to fix him in the minors. Adam Scott could be selected at some point, probably in the later rounds.

I tend to think that the underclassman most likely to leave early is Howell, but I sure hope he's back.

I agree, Howell, would be big if he comes back and a big loss if he leaves. I think he will stay unless he has his mind made up to go already.
