Re: Pro signees update (lost a signee)
No offense to anyone, but the 31st round? Does he think he can't do better than that later on?

Re: Pro signees update (lost a signee)
few things may have played a role
1. Yankees can offer a 31st rounder more $$$ than any other team, but him being from Mountain Brook you would think he's got $$$
2. Maybe he hates school, and wants to go on and play
3. Probably won't get developed into a better player here, and knew that

Re: Pro signees update (lost a signee)
Kind of surprised by this turn of events, particularly with him being only a 31st round pick and having a great chance to play a lot for us next year. But as noted, the Yankees have a lot of money to throw around and I have heard that some of that money has been set aside for college if the pros do not work out. Just wish him the best.

Re: Pro signees update (lost a signee)
according to Baseball America, they have not
BaseballAmerica.com: Draft: Draft Database
there's a team by team list to look at, it's what I check about once a day
of the other signees, the Mets drafted Trey Pilkington and the Pirates drafted Matt Taylor, both real, real late. So I'd be shocked if they signed, but still need to watch out for.

Leverage, backup plan, etc...
This is the first time these players are being put into a situation that they must make a business decision and most of their parents have never gone through this. They commit making sure they have options and in most cases they make these decisions 6 months before the Pro Draft. If they wait to commit until the Pro Draft, there is a chance the school offering originally is no longer going to offer as they have all the commitments they need. This is not an easy process these players go through.
The university coaches know this and this is why teams over recruit making sure they have their needs meet just in case.

My point is if he doesn't think he is going to get better here, then why commit here? He could probably go to a number of schools to play ball (and get better if he can't do it here). If you think about it, the day he steps foot on campus, he is locked in for 3 years before he can be draft eligible unless he goes JUCO. So, again, why commit here if you are going to sign being drafted in the 31st round....

Here is possible scenario. As you know, Golsan was a spring(what would be considered the late signing period) signee. By that point in time he had probably talked to enough representatives from different MLB clubs to know that he was going to get drafted. Most kids who know that they are going to be drafted sign with a school knowing the won't go there, but they will use it as leverage to gain more money. Him signing with Bama and bluffing about going there could have caused him to slip to later rounds. My guess is that if he had been drafted by a team with less money to throw around than the Yankees do, he would have went to a JUCO and be draft eligible after his Freshman year. He probably had it set up with a JUCO in the state, such as Shelton or Wallace-Hanceville, to sign with them if he didn't get the money he wanted. He would probably gain more money if the team knew he would be stuck at a school for three years rather than him being signed with a JUCO and knowing he would be eligible to draft again the next year.

WOW ZONA! Is your animosity directed at the program or the coach??? I have to disagree....maybe a pitcher wont get developed into a better player but a position guy has a good chance. If you will go back and compare offensive stats with other teams you can see that. Now, that being said the head cheese still makes all the calls on the situational type plays(bunts, H&R, steals) which i think we could use more to force action. But, i do think Mitch and Dax do a good job teaching defense as well as hitting.

Re: Pro signees update (lost a signee)
The "getting better" part was more of a joke, well I hope it was since we know pitchers don't get better here.
Mitch and Dax get guys to hit the hell out of the ball much better than when they first arrived. I've yet to see anyone get better fundamentally, with bunts, etc. I hope Kyle Moore would have been taught how to catch a fly ball in 5 years, but that mistake (which should never have happened because of Mitch's total mismanagement of that game) turned our season back sour again
I hope that changes.
