*Jimmy Nelson (4-1/1.33) has been overmatching the competition in the Florida Collegiate, allowing just 19 hits over 40.2 innings, with 19 walks (too many) and 53 strikeouts. Nelson is one of three Tide players on the roster of the DeLand Suns. Redshirt freshman outfielder Brandt Hendricks has demonstrated a patient approach and solid on-base skills, posting a .292/.452/.382 line. Righthander Tyler White's summer, on the other hand, has been abysmal. Although he's obviously quite difficult to hit, with a whopping 25 strikeouts in just 10.2 innings, and an opponents' average of just .158, as was the case this past season, all of his damage has been self-inflicted. Thirteen walks, 2 wild pitches, a HBP and a balk are the reason he sits at 0-1/7.59. White clearly has dominating stuff, but absolutely no clue where it's going.
*Also playing in the FCL is Chris Smelley, who is hitting .238/.415/.349 with 2 homers and 7 stolen bases for the Sanford River Rats. Behind the plate, he has a 35% caught stealing rate.
*Brandon May has appeared in 9 games with the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod League. Josh Rutledge is the regular shortstop for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. After failing to make the final Team USA roster (a stupid decision on the part of Tulane HC Rick Jones,
IMO), it doesn't appear that Ross Wilson will be reporting to the Harwich Mariners.
*Clay Jones is hitting .329/.448/.400 for Vermont of the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Teammate Austin Evans is 3-0/1.40, but with an unacceptable total of 12 walks in 19.2 innings.
*Redshirt freshmen Kent Myer and Matt Baca are playing for the Lima Locos of the Great Lakes League.
