Big A Summer League update

Share

*Jimmy Nelson (4-1/1.33) has been overmatching the competition in the Florida Collegiate, allowing just 19 hits over 40.2 innings, with 19 walks (too many) and 53 strikeouts. Nelson is one of three Tide players on the roster of the DeLand Suns. Redshirt freshman outfielder Brandt Hendricks has demonstrated a patient approach and solid on-base skills, posting a .292/.452/.382 line. Righthander Tyler White's summer, on the other hand, has been abysmal. Although he's obviously quite difficult to hit, with a whopping 25 strikeouts in just 10.2 innings, and an opponents' average of just .158, as was the case this past season, all of his damage has been self-inflicted. Thirteen walks, 2 wild pitches, a HBP and a balk are the reason he sits at 0-1/7.59. White clearly has dominating stuff, but absolutely no clue where it's going.

*Also playing in the FCL is Chris Smelley, who is hitting .238/.415/.349 with 2 homers and 7 stolen bases for the Sanford River Rats. Behind the plate, he has a 35% caught stealing rate.

*Brandon May has appeared in 9 games with the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod League. Josh Rutledge is the regular shortstop for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. After failing to make the final Team USA roster (a stupid decision on the part of Tulane HC Rick Jones, IMO), it doesn't appear that Ross Wilson will be reporting to the Harwich Mariners.

*Clay Jones is hitting .329/.448/.400 for Vermont of the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Teammate Austin Evans is 3-0/1.40, but with an unacceptable total of 12 walks in 19.2 innings.

*Redshirt freshmen Kent Myer and Matt Baca are playing for the Lima Locos of the Great Lakes League.

Big A Re: Summer League update

Thanks for the info JoJo. What stand out to me is the numbers by Chris Smelley. Those are great numbers considering he has not played baseball in several years. All he needs is AB's and plenty of reps behind the plate this summer and he will be ready to compete in the fall. Hopefully White and Evans can gain some instruction to control their location of pitches. And to some degree, Jimmy Nelson.

Ditto that, we really need Nelson to step it up next year grab the bull by the horns. He has shown flashes of being spectacular. We need him quite showing flashes and simply be spectacular. White and Evans could help us go a long way in revamping the staff also.

Good to see updates on the guys, thanks JoJo.

Unfortunately, CK, the current post totals don't reflect those made for the board's first three years or so due to a site crash. DT probably lost about a thousand posts. It's unfortunate because it was once possible to go all the way back and read the posts from the board's first season (2001).

I hope this doesn't disappoint you too much

Well, that kinda makes me feel good. Just 2 short years ago I had like 200 posts. Then started doing game updates and next thing ya know you are doing 5-600 or so a season. And to think I seldom/rarely post on any of the other boards, my have 20 total posts outside of the baseball board. In all fairness to DT, his post are usually insightful!
