Re: Brandon May signs with Cubs

Yea, this is baffling to me JoJo. Seriously, he stays, has another stellar year and should be a top 20 round pick easily imo. Not sure of the money difference between the 39 round and say the 18 round, but it has got to be some. O well, at least we didn't lose any incoming players....yet.

Re: Brandon May signs with Cubs

Being from Georgia we have some friends close to Brandon's situation and the Cubs came after him pretty hard after watching him play for Cotuit in the Cape at SS for 11 games and 2B for 8 games comitting only 1 error. He signed for 8th round money, and although they drafted him as second baseman are trying to convert him to catcher.

That being said you can't blame him for signing. Very few multi-position senior players would be drafted very high or be offered 8th round money. We will miss his bat and leadership at Alabama and wish him the best.

Re: Brandon May signs with Cubs

1. CF - Dugas
2. SS - Rutledge
3. 2B - Wilson
4. 3B - Smith
5. DH/1B - Jones
6. C - Smelley/Trotter
7. DH/1B - ????
8. OF - A.Miller
9. OF - ?????

Help me fill in the blanks if anyone knows who has had good summers. I'm in football mode now and trying to remember who the other options are.

Thanks for that info, GA Tide. While he might have improved his situation after another year, it was hardly guaranteed. Unlike other former Tide players who benefited from a fourth year (Jeremy Brown, Kent Matthes), May's prospect status was largely tied to what he can do at the plate. I can certainly understand taking the eighth round money as well as the Cubs' decision to convert him to catcher, where his bat profiles best as well as providing him the best shot at advancement.

Although listed as a pitcher, Brett Whitaker from Shelton could be a two-way option. He hit .337/.440/.398 with more walks than strikeouts (always a good sign) and can handle the four corner positions. Although his power numbers weren't overly impressive, the on-base skills alone make him a potentially valuable addition.

Redshirted players: Matt Baca is a prototypical 1B/DH type. Brandt Hendricks could see action at an outfield corner (not sure if he's still catching). Kent Myer is listed as infielder, but if he hits enough to warrant inclusion in the lineup, it wouldn't be out of the question to see him in the outfield.

Cal Tinsley and Jon Kelton return as the super-utility guys who can pretty much play all over the field.

Re: Brandon May signs with Cubs

Being both a Cub and Bama fan this is a slight bittersweet situation for me. I love the fact he signed with the Cubs, but the Bama fan in me wished he came back to T-Town.

With that said, I hope he succeeds.
