Friday and Saturday Scrimmages

Anybody go to the scrimmage today that could provide a recap as to how they did?

Also, I went yesterday, and just based on what I saw, if Smelley gets his footwork right, he's got a heck of an arm behind the plate. Offensively, he needed some more work from what I saw, but that's the great thing about this sport. He could come out today and hit the cover off the ball.

I also thought that Andrew Miller looked good at the plate, I'm guessing he's still recovering from an ankle injury cause he didn't run out any hits. Josh Sanders also looked pretty good, hit a couple of line drives to the gaps.

We hit-and-run and sacrificed runners over a lot. I'm not sure if we'll do it that much during the year or if we we're just emphasizing it in fall practice, but I liked seeing that kind of aggressive attitude at the plate instead of waiting for the gapper or the long ball.

I thought the pitchers threw a lot of balls but I figure control will come as they get farther along in the year. A couple of the true freshman pitched and they looked good as well. Jimmy Nelson needs to have a big time year this year, and he pitched well yesterday.

It's going to be interesting to see how the weekend rotation shapes up. I'm going with:
1. Morgan (for sure)
2. Nelson (hopefully he pitches to his potential)
3. No idea, hopefully one of the freshman can step up, but I haven't seen enough of them to offer an opinion for the third or weekday starts.

I'm hoping we can get more arms involved this year as far as the pen goes. Last year seemed we relied on a couple main guys to come in the game, and they got worn out towards the end of the year and weren't as effective. Just my take on it.

Overall, I'm excited about this season. If some key guys (namely pitchers) step up this could be an above-average season. If not, then it can still be a good year, but just not as good. Then again, I may just be eternally optimistic about my Tide.

Thanks for the update.

You can wear it to the game on Saturday, hunting on Sunday, and picking up trash along the highways the rest of the week.
