Gottfried, who had announced on Monday that Miles was no longer practicing with the team, said that he did not know where Miles would enroll.
“We wish Glenn well in whatever he chooses to do," Gottfried said.
Miles, a 6-foot-4 guard, was an All-State selection at West End High School in Birmingham for the past two seasons.
Miles' departure leaves Steele as the only scholarship point guard at Alabama. | | | | | Crimson Tide point guard Miles quits team | Quote: | | | | "With our situation with Glenn, our backups are now LaKory Daniels and Brandon Davis," Gottfried said, "so he'll have to stay out of foul trouble and stay healthy. And we'll have to learn how to play with Ronald out of the lineup."
Daniels, a point guard as a freshman and sophomore at Charles Henderson High in Troy, walked on at Alabama after averaging 26.5 points as a senior. He was redshirted last season after breaking a bone in his foot in preseason practice, but has looked promising at times in both 2003 and 2004 preseason practices.
Davis, a guard at Selma High last season, was a second-team all-state performer for the Saints in 2004. He likely was headed for a redshirt season before Miles' departure. | | | | | Team point guard Miles leaves | Quote: | | | | Gottfried said having a pair of walk-on players as the only point guard depth poses a dilemma.
"Obviously, Ron needs to stay healthy, stay out of foul trouble," Gottfried said. "We have to be prepared to play when he's not in the game, whether that's playing one of the walk-on guys or we play with Earnest (Shelton) and Ken (Winston) at guard and kind of play without a true point guard for a while. That's going to be an interesting thing for us to figure out to be quite honest."
Gottfried said the loss of Miles also changes the Tide's recruiting emphasis. | | | | | Miles leaves Tide; Gottfried signs four | Quote: | | | | Gottfried confirmed the university has granted Miles a release from his scholarship obligations. Miles could not be reached for comment on Tuesday, and it is uncertain where he intends to transfer.
One of the state's best prospects out of Birmingham West End last year, Miles did not score in only eight minutes of playing time in Alabama's exhibition opener against Stillman. The 6-4 guard was not on the bench for the exhibition finale against Athletes in Action last Saturday. | | | | | Freshman Miles leaves Tide hoops | Quote: | | | | "Glenn Miles has withdrawn from our team and is seeking to transfer," Gottfried said. "We wish him the best and I think that's about all I'd like to say about that."
Miles had gotten off to a slow start with the Tide this season. Gottfried said two weeks ago that he had "struggled" in practice and did not play until the second half of the Tide's first exhibition game last week.
That did not match the promise he had as a highly rated recruit from Birmingham's West End High.
The 6-foot-4 Miles was a first-team all-state selection in Class 5A last spring after averaging 18 points per game. Miles led West End to the Class 5A state championship finals in 2002 and 2003. | | | | | Freshman guard says goodbye to Tide hoops | Quote: | | | | Without Miles, 18th-ranked Alabama is left with Steele as the only scholarship player at point guard. The backups are walk-ons LaKory Daniels and Brandon Davis, though senior shooting guard Earnest Shelton is a likely replacement at point when Steele exits the floor.
"It's just an adjustment you have to get used to," Shelton said. "I don't think it will be too strenuous. I don't think I'll play tons of time at (point). Fact is, I might have to play some time at it, so I'll be ready." | | | | |
