I think so, with scholly reductions, & the fact that these mid majors are getting really good....it will happen one day. There were 8 games yesterday that were decided by 5pts or less.

Note

I doubt it , if only because I dont think you will see a mid major at 16. The 16th spot will almost always go to the Eastern State Tech College type like the one that Ky has drawn.

I definitely think it's possible. It happened on the women's side a couple of years ago. I don't remember the year or the teams, but I think I recall a #1 seed beating a #16 seed by only a point.

With teams like Holy Cross, Arizona St, Tulsa, East TN St, Wisc Mill, Central Mich, Utah St, S Ill, & Manhattan...just to name a few that either won or took it the wire...it will happen one day IMO.

Note

"One day" takes in a lot of territory, sooner or later it will happen. But your usual 16 seeds aren't your good mid majors, they are the winners from some very small conferences that probably shouldn't be playing D-1 basketball at all.

Note

I believe there have been some close calls. What is going to have to happen is have a very small school such as Manhatten have a solid starting 5, with a lot of luck, and have the 1 seed take them lightly and incur an injury of tremendous proportions either during the game or just prior to it. That's about the only way I see it ever happening in the men's side.

That was Georgetown and Princeton. I am thinking it was 1989.

Once every three or four years, a #1 seed is challenged by a #16 seed. It is just a matter of time before the #16 wins.

The women's #1 seed that lost to a #16 was Stanford after they lost their best player to injury that previous week.

Note

I think it's possible. Arizona gets a lot of high seeds and usually doesn't play well in the early rounds. They have been upset as a 2 by a 15 twice in the last 20 years. Then they won the title as a 4 seed a few years ago so go figure. I think Zona could come in as a 1 and get knocked out by a 16 one year for sure.

Note

the 2 has lost to the 15 a couple of times. no reason the think that a 1 seed can't fall one of these days.
