I wish him the best.

Arguably the best point guard no one ever really got to see. He really looked to be coming into his own his soph. year when he nearly dropped a 3 pointer to knock UCLA out of the NCAA tourney.

A class act all the way, hopefully much success is in his future.

How do you think the team reacts to the loss of Steele against Ole Miss tonight?

Steele says injury definitely not reason for departure | TideSports.com | The Tuscaloosa News | Tuscaloosa, AL

Read this from Tidesports - it speaks volumes. Notice that not a word was said about CMG. This is the proverbial "nail in the coffin."

This is also the proverbial "I'm taking my ball and going home." This leaves a bad taste in my mouth about two men who will not be part of the basketball program next season: CMG and Ron Steele. I wish it would've ended differently.

Re: Ron Steele's Career is Over

Aaarrrggghhhh!!!!! So this is what we are left with? I could play and help my team mates win but I'd just rather not? That's what we get from Ronald Steele? He couldn't stick it out six more weeks?

I KNOW that very, very few of us have a lot of sympathy for Mark Gottfried, but I am not worried about him, I am worried about THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA. I will have fond memories of Ron's time on the court for us. Who wouldn't? But I really wish that he would have kept his damn mouth shut. Damn it! What about the other guys on this team? What about their sacrifice?

It wouldn't surprise me if we lost a very winnable game tonight because of this. This is extremely un-cool!

Re: Ron Steele's Career is Over

Since I only know part of the reasons behind his decision, I'm inclined to give him some slack. He hints that CMG hasn't had his (Steele's) best interests at heart, and it's hard to argue with that.

I have had a similar experience with a coach and it is a difficult decision. However, when it affects your health, safety, family etc. you have to sometimes do what is best for you (especially if the coach is completely unwilling to give an inch). If you don't know the whole story then I would say to at least consider reserving judgment.

Re: Ron Steele's Career is Over

Lot's of players can say that. Heck, the majority of football players can probably say that. thank goodness they don't just quit.

Maybe I am over reacting, but this is very, very bad stuff. Well, if his intention was to make sure that CMG was fired then he no doubt will get his wish. I only wish that his biggest priority was to help his buddies win basketball games.

As I said, I am 100% that this is a darn complicated situation and that I am being oversimplistic, but hey, it's a message board and I can rant a little.

Hard to get up for tonight's game now.

Big A Re: Ron Steele's Career is Over

Quote:
Steele said he "could have" been physically able to return from his foot injury and said he plans to continue playing basketball in the future for "as long as I can."

Asked directly about any conflict with UA head coach Mark Gottfried, Steele said only "this was the best decision for me and I want to leave it at that."
So what in the world happened??

My thoughts here:

1. How much could we use Rico Pickett right now??

2. Will this affect Andrew’s future with the team? It shouldn’t since CMG will not be coaching the team next year.

3. This may come across as Ron walking out on the team at the worst possible time, but I will reserve my judgment until all the facts are known.

4. We’re gonna find out what kind of character this team has because we’re in a tight spot (Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?)

Re: Ron Steele's Career is Over

Rant away. I wish he were still on the team as well, but considering how hard he has worked to get back on the court for Bama when he could have left three years ago I would surmise it is something pretty serious for him to "just quit."

Re: Ron Steele's Career is Over

I'm not very a learned basketball fan. I just know you have to score more than the other team does. but when your best players are leaving the team mid season and the team which I understood to be talented is getting demolished by BAD teams, its time for Mal Moore to act, I don't care what the sport. The University owes it to the kids who are sweating it out to represent them.
