Tubby Smith (UK Basketball) = Larry Coker (Miami Football).
To say it never improved is a little bit irrelevent for Anthony Grant, considering he was at a mid-major school, was only there three years, and won 24 + games all three years. With Grant, the hiring decision is partly on experience, but mainly on potential.
Again, Tubby Smith is a good coach and a good person, but he has already been at the Pinnacle job in SEC basketball and did not have it going in the right direction. He definitely did not leave Billy Gillespie a loaded cupboard. Tubby Smith would have been a short term fix, but not the answer for us long term.
I never thought Tubby would come. But, Tubby was a heck of an X's and O's coach who couldn't recruit.
So then he's left with David Hobbs and Reggie Freakin' Hanson to recruit. We know how that movie was gonna end.
Capel built VCU. I personally would of loved to seen Grant have one more year at VCU to see what his full roster of his guys did. Obviously we didn't have a year to wait. I won't lie. He was low on my list and maybe not in my top 10 of "realistic" choices. I'm not throwing the established (Izzo, Calipari, Pitino, Tubby) in my list either.
Gotcha!! But, how many "Championship Head Coach" prospects are out there? 0!!!
Not many. That's why someone should of rewrote that statement. I guess he is a "Championship Coach." Just wish it was something better than the Colonial.
I'm trying to slot Grant in my rankings of coaches in the league:
#1. Donovan- UF
#2. Johnson-LSU (Yes I really think he's this good)
#3. Pearl- UT
#4. Stallings- Vandy
#5-10. Everyone else. (Grant is in the shuffle right now.)
#11. Kentucky Vacancy
#12. UGA Vacancy

What are your thoughts?
So, we just hired the guy who spent 11 seasons learning under Billy Donovan, who according to your list above is the #1 head coach in the SEC, and you don't like the hire?
Despite Bama n KY, very excellent arguements; Grant is a good hire. Good man, Knows his business and works very hard. I agree he is not Saben, yet. MG was a good coach for us, and almost took us to the next level, he just lost his way. We have a good base and a coach like Grant should be able to build on it and take us to elite status. This will put him on the Donovan and Pitino level. Time will tell, I am excited, RTR!
Well, he's taking a deserved rest. I just can't understand why we heard absolutely nothing from him before the hire, and then, suddenly, every third post is from him, knocking Grant and the UA staff hiring him...

I believe you should be able to express your opinion, and not always blindly follow the leader. That said, this was a good search, we got a good, not great, coach with a great upside potential. He deserves our support and a chance to express that potential.

I think Bama did about as well as they could have done with this hire, and I'm excited about it.
Fact is, Bama basketball can't just go out and pluck a "Saban-esque" hoops coach from an established power. We've just not elevated ourselves as a hoops program the way a team like Florida has.
But in hiring their would-have-been coach, I think we just got a little closer.
I will remain excited about the hire. If BamaFaninKY is Yin then I am Yang. CAG will have to prove me wrong to get me down. I am expecting great things at the Capstone in my two favorite sports once again.
There's no problem with dissent in TideFans. The problem comes when the dissent crosses the line, and what was once honest debate becomes destructive to the overarching goal -- the betterment of the University of Alabama. It's admittedly a fine line, but if you can't see it, you're likely to get suspended or banned.
BFNKY made some good points. But he couldn't let it go, and hung on like a pit bull. It became apparent that winning the arguments with other posters was more important to him than the longer-term good of the University.
Whether your favorite was Coach Grant or some other candidate, no good is served at this point by trashing him or by saying that other coaches would have been better hires.
Anthony Grant is our coach. He represents a tremendous upgrade, and I'm glad to have him. In three years, I hope we're sweating UCLA, Indiana, UNC, Duke or UConn coming after him.

I really think that Mal and Mr. Hart really did their due diligence on this one and reached out to a lot of resources (C.M., Pitino, etc.) to help them make their decision. Apparently people who really know the game of basketball highly recommended Grant and thus Bama put on the full court press to get him. I believe AG is a very good coach and is someone that can and will rejuvenate this basketball program. This hire was a home run in my opinion and will put us back on the basketball map. I can't wait to hear Coleman rocking next year! rtr

I am excited too. I think that even IF Tubby or Anderson were willing to come to Bama, that we still went the right way with Grant. Tubby is a great X's and O's guy who can't recruit worth anything. Anderson has the graduation issues. Don't you realize that if he puts up a 32% graduation rate here, then we will lose a bunch of scholly's? Grant is strong in every aspect of the game. Florida just hasn't been the same since he left, which should tell you something.
Oh and Grant has a winning percentage of 0.752. Saban's first three years at Michigan St. he was 50-33. A mere 0.602. We should just go and fire Saban right now because that percentage isn't good enough for some people.

Concur, will be buying tickets. He is our man now, and I think we will be very happy this time next year.
