Alabama basketball signee Cully Payne was released from his letter of intent today, leaving an extra scholarship for new Crimson Tide coach Anthony Grant.
"He just wanted to play for Mark," said Kent Payne, Cully's father. "It wasn't anything toward Anthony or Alabama. He had a connection with Mark, and that was important to him."
Payne was one of five prospects to sign with Alabama in November. Among forward Shawn Kemp Jr., forward Tony Mitchell and junior college signees Charvez Davis and Chris Hines, each so far are expected to be a part of the Crimson Tide next season.

I'm pretty sure that CAG will make the most of it! Hate to see someone leave, but I would like a player that wants to play for Alabama and not a coach.

Maybe it will open a scholarship for Eric Bledsoe,
Anthony Grant wasting no time on the recruiting trail
New Alabama basketball coach Anthony Grant is set to meet this afternoon with touted point guard Eric Bledsoe of Parker High School in Birmingham, Bledsoe's high school coach told TiderInsider.com today.
Looks like he's targeting Bledsoe, although I'm pretty sure he'll make a run at Cousins as well.

Commit, I think. I think he's a one-year ticket puncher, anyway...

To say this in a nice, kind way...I think it is best that he got his release.
Best of luck to ya!

In addition to Gottfried's Jan. 26 resignation, Payne has had a rough time recently. A back injury shortened his senior season, and according to this recent article in the Chicago Sun-Times, Payne was hospitalized while suffering from vertigo.
That's a shame regarding Payne.....he is a true point from what I've heard. Old School.......Gym Rat type. He would have been a nice 15-20 minute kid that you know wouldn't dribble the ball off of his foot.
I wish him well!

I think Bledsoe is as close to a must-have as Bama and CAG have for this particular class. We need a point-guard, but I would take a one-yearer like DC anytime.
Anybody think the NBA will ever adopt a policy like the NFL? I don't because it is just such a different game physically.

I don't seem them doing it, but I do think it would be benefiticial if they did. I think if they did their fanbase would grow. The players would mature during the 3 year period. Another thing that would cause people to like the NBA even more is because America could "fall in love" with the players while they are in college. My brother and I had a discussion similar to this a while back. He made the point that he (and the rest of the country) was unable to get to know Kevin Durant. That got me to thinking about why the country loves Tyler Hansbrough so much. The country has seen him grow and gotten to know him in his 4 year career.
My point is that America would stay with the NBA if they had a reason to watch. After watching a player for 3 or 4 years in college, a person will most likely want to watch them in the pro's. Just my two cents.
