NOTICE! Memphis - releasing early signees if Calipari leaves ....

Share

If Calipari leaves, it will have significant ramifications on both the immediate and distant future of Memphis basketball.

A source close to the team said as many as three current players including Wesley Witherspoon, Roburt Sallie and Angel Garcia may strongly consider transferring from Memphis if Calipari accepts the Kentucky job.

It’s also unlikely there would be much of a recruiting class left for Calipari’s successor.

"Carol Dennis, the mother of University of Memphis recruit Nolan Dennis, told The Commercial Appeal Monday that the letter-of-intent her son signed last fall contains an addendum that would allow him to follow Calipari to another school.

"All four players who signed with Memphis in the fall have the same unconditional release in their letters."

Re: Memphis - releasing early signees if Calipari leaves ....

The LOI signed by Memphis' four November signees — Henry, Dennis, Coleman and Dodson — included an out clause that allows them to go to another school if Calipari was fired or left for another job.

Good for Memphis and Calipari for offering the out clause, but the NCAA should take note and make this standard operating procedure.

Would it make recruiting an even bigger fiasco than it already is? Probably.

Don't underestimate the seductive nature of recruiting, as millionaire coaches flash their charisma to lure the best players to their school. And if the coach leaves after a player signs, he's out of luck.

That's not fair, and the NCAA should fix it.
