This is a better option than some of the names that I was hearing. I mean Leonard Hamilton...really? Do you really want a mediocre coach like that?
Give your top assistant a chance. The guy is a great recruiter. If he doesn't work out, you can fire him after two or three years and get a big name. As I've stated before, there are slim pickings out there now with head coaches.

I have a hard time believing that they couldn't draw a more established coach. At least UGA got someone with experience.
Agreed. I wonder, how much of the non-interest by big name coaches is due to the fact that the squid is taking most of his recruiting class with him to the Bluegrass State?

I thought to myself yesterday when I heard about the hire, that I wish I had a dollar for every time the word "who?" is uttered when news of this hire is spread around. It was definitely the first word out of my mouth.
Re: Memphis finally hires coach....not exactly a splash....
Why is anyone surprised that Memphis had to settle for an assistant?
Memphis does not have a long lineage of top notch coaches.
Calipari was at Memphis 9 years(?) and had them really competing for the last 5 years. His run is NOT comparable to that of a Jim Calhoun or Coach K. Calhoun and K took nowhere schools and made them relevant for a long time.
What happened when Calipari left UMASS? Same situation- a decent school in an inferior conference. He leads them to big time basketball and then leaves them for greener pastures. The problem is that neither school is/was a big enough name to continue what was started.
This hire is not a shock, but rather simply the best Memphis could hope for.
