Read an interesting article in the Raleigh newspaper regarding the recruitment of John Wall that got me thinking. Roy Williams called Wall to see how he was doing and Wall was asked if UNC was recruiting him. Wall said no, Coach Williams just called to check up on him. The guy who heads up the summer basketball program that Wall plays for (and is advising Wall) said: "I have no desire to talk to, to be involved with, to visit, to contemplate in any shape, form or fashion John Wall going to play for Roy Williams. Zero." He also said Memphis was the leader for Wall prior to Calipari leaving for Kentucky and UK is now on Wall's list. Duke is also involved and Wall's coach and advisor said "I respect Coach K and the way he goes about business...He was enough of a professional to deal with people based on who they really are, not on what he's heard they might be. I'd be comfortable with any of my guys learning from and being shaped and molded by a guy who's got that in his character."
Hmmm. As a parent I would not appreciate a high school coach having that much influence on my child's future. Since character and the ability to mold and shape a young adult are so important why would Calipari be so much more preferable than Williams? Doesn't make sense to me. From what I saw last night Coach Williams does a pretty good job of that too. I wonder what really transpired. Maybe Coach Williams reacted the same way I would have. Let the kid and his family decide what is best for him and not a high school coach who MAY have his own agenda and really isn't considering what is best for the player. That should be up the kids and their parents,
IMO.
