But it was a ring of another kind that Grant truly craved that year. Determined to end what at that point was a 27-year drought between Miami High state titles, Grant was crushed when the Stingarees were eliminated in the district final against Northwestern.
''He was devastated, as we all were,'' Rodriguez said. ``After the game, we looked around and couldn't find him.''
Grant, so distraught with the loss and the end of his high school career, had decided to make the three-mile walk home -- in full uniform -- without even going to the locker room.
''I got in my car and found him walking home with his jersey covering his head,'' Rodriguez said.
``I don't even think he could see where he was going.''
Got the desire to win, like another coach currently on our campus...
Indeed, last year's VCU roster featured six players from the state of Florida who had signed with the Rams during Grant's three-year tenure at the school. That includes freshman forward Terrance Saintil, who called Grant a ''very aggressive'' coach.
''He goes straight to the point and tells you what he wants you to do,'' said Saintil, a former standout at Pace.
Saintil said Grant gave each VCU player specific instructions on how to play. Saintil, for example, was told he would not get a pass unless he had both feet in the paint.
The message was clear: Grant wanted Saintil -- one of the two biggest players on the team at 6-8, 230 pounds -- to use his muscle inside.
''If a guy passed me the ball when I was not completely in the paint, then he was coming out of the game,'' Saintil said.
The trip to the bench usually came with an obligatory stare from Grant.
''I wouldn't call it the evil eye,'' Saintil said. ``I would call it the eye that makes you do the right thing.''
