Bear Bryant's Biggest Score

Posted October 3rd, 2008 at 09:03 AM by bamachile

Bear's battle with segregation went back to his days as the head football coach at Kentucky. A few of the issues and people are mentioned in this article which details Coach Bryant's rebuffed attempts to integrate football at UK, TAMU, and for a while, Alabama. This article, although not extremely deep, is a good primer for anyone interested in the Coach's stance on integration at a time when it was a defining belief.

Outstanding Tuscaloosa News article on Coach Gene Stalling and family. Good detail on John Mark Stallings and interesting comments at the end of the article. A must-read.

Hunting with Bear

Posted September 4th, 2008 at 01:00 PM by bamachile

Curt Gowdy's column is more of a personal look at Coach Bear Bryant, and a good one. It is sometimes forgotten that Bear was an important figure in breaking the color barrier in the early 70's--this ESPN article touches on the subject toward the end, even if only briefly.

Bear is Showman, Even in Defeat

Posted September 4th, 2008 at 12:45 PM by bamachile

It was a bad day for Bear and a good day for Gene Stallings. Texas A&M had defeated Alabama in the 1968 Cotton Bowl, but the Dallas press was still covering the mighty Bear. A good article on a classic match-up.
