Your train might only be hitting a milk tanker

I heard a good sermon Sunday morning in Natchez.

We had a preacher, who happened to be a former train engineer, to speak at the morning vespers service for our scouts.

He said he used to drive the train that went from Vicksburg to Natchez. About thirty years ago, they were traveling near Fayette (20 minutes north of Natchez), and remembered a bad curve in the road that followed alongside the train tracks. That area had been known to have some vehicle accidents that would end up on the tracks.

Sure enough, there was an accident ahead. A tanker had wrecked on the curve and was laying over the tracks. In horror, his crew immediately set the brakes and blew the whistle. However, as many of you know, it takes about a mile for a train to come to a stop.

They knew they were going to hit the tanker, and they immediately went to cover. Some prayed. Some prayed out loud. A train hitting a vehicle is bad enough.

A train hitting a tanker with gasoline...well, that's certain death.

They braced themselves and sure enough, they hit the train. However, to their surprise and delight, there was no big explosion.

When they crawled out of the wreck they realized the tanker they hit...was carrying milk.

So, the next time you see a problem ahead in your life, just remember: It might not be as bad as it seems.

Your train may only be hitting a milk tanker.
