Jay Barker. He was no Joe Namath, but he just got the job done. And he came up big when the Tide needed him the most. The 1994 UGA game for example. I grew up watching Jay and got to meet him in 1993. When I met him I was just in awe because I thought so much of him. He was just the type of qb Bama needed in the offensive system we had during those years. He ran the team well as a leader and didn't make mistakes to get the team beat. Roll Tide Roll. Beat the viles.

"WHAT THE HELL'S THE MATTER WITH YOU PEOPLE DOWN THERE? DON'T Y'ALL TAKE YOUR FOOTBALL SERIOUSLY?" -- Coach Bryant, upon calling Auburn at 6 AM only to find out that none of the coaches were in their offices yet!
Well, this one is almost impossible. My first memories of Alabama football was BAMA beating the barn in 1990. Everything before that I either read about or watched replays of. So, my favorite BAMA player that I saw play has to be Derrick Lassic in 1992. He waited patiently for his turn, and he made the most of it as a senior in '92. He had such a "never quit" running style. I really enjoyed watching him run wild on the 'canes in the '93 Sugar Bowl.
My favorite BAMA player period would have to be "Bully" Vandegraff. I know I've misspelled his last name. Anyway, he was BAMA's 1st All-American and the reason he's my favorite is the famous quote that I know somebody will have. Something about his ear being cut during a game and he was going to pull it off to keep playing but someone stopped him and they taped it up. Amazing story. Somebody's got to have that quote. If you do, please post it.
Mine is Shaun Alexander. He was a team leader and I loved watching him play, and I have ever purchased many of his games from Simon. He made his most lasting impression to me after he gave all the credit to God after our win at Florida in 99.
Thats a great pick! I never had the opportunity to meet Shaun, but he sets a great example and is a terrific role-model (for all the reasons you mention).
I'm sort of torn with my picks because there are so many. I always said Joe Nameth or Ken Stabler were my favorites. But then I met Jay Barker when he was at Alabama and he was a terrific person. I used to work in a menial position at Alabama and Jay would always come by and shake my hand when he was in the building. He was like that. He didnt seem to care that i was a nobody in a little nothing clerical position. He knew I was a huge fan that was a little bit in awe of the Bama team (it was around the last time we won the National championship). I'm sure he wouldn't remember, but it made a huge impression on me.
So I guess Jay Barker has my vote. But there are a lot of cool former Crimson Tiders i could vote for. Tommy Wilcox was nice guy and a heckuva ball player. Walter Lewis, Prince Wimbley, Bobby Humphrey and Kerry Goode were too!
Don't forget why he came back...Mama Called. He came home to where he played ball. Yes, I know most of us if not all never saw him play. But to read the stories of his guts and toughness as a player are the thing of legend. To play with a broken leg against the Viles. How awesome is that. As a player as well as a coach the BEAR will always exude what true Alabama football is all about.
i gotta go with shaun in a close one over the man who had me wearing the number 2 in every sport growing up, the deuce
teague comes in third, sam shade 4th

Reason: forgot
2. My favorite player that I've actually seen play has to be Derrick Thomas.
His combination of speed, athleticism, tenacity and flat-out love of playing the game is the stuff legends are made of. God, I loved watching him play.
I remember (I believe it was his freshman year) we were playing in the Hula Bowl and he had two pass interference calls against him late in the game. He was like a giant kid out there, a little embarrassed but having a great time anyway.
Of course, everybody remembers the Penn St. game. What he did on the field that day is something I'll never forget. Total domination by one player.
I'll remember him as always smiling, and always lethal.
