Big A Spurrier..love or hate 'em

Share

I do neither, but there are times I respect him in certain matters. Talked with my son today that teaches at the University of SC. He says the latest flap going there is that Spurrier pulled scholarships from 5 players and gave them to walk ons.His reason....they were missing practise's and late for meetings. He said he is catching flack from writers for this. Steve S says you have to consider the source. From around Clemson!

I like and have always liked Spurrier. I like his style of play. He is a little more cocky (no pun intended) than I care for, but as far as his college coaching resume is concerned, he has room to boast.

I couldn't stand him when he was at UF. I've talked a good bit with a UF fan on a hiking board and have really 180'd. It took me a while, but I discoverd that the reason so many folks don't like SOS aren't all that different from the reasons the rest of the SEC isn't too keen on us. Success breeds jealousy.

I like Steve Spurrier because he is great for college football. Yes, he is a little cocky but you HAVE TO have some cockiness to do anything great.

He is a coach who will tell it like it is with the way that only Mr. Spurrier can. (i.e. You can't spell Citrus without UT) How classic is that?

You want him coaching your program. He is one of those. You can't stand him on the opposite sideline but you would welcome him to your sideline anyday. He has been humbled by the NFL and seems more enjoyable this time around.

. . .but let's get a big "w" in Columbia this year!!!

Here's a link to the story.

Quote:
Earlier this summer, Spurrier wrote to six players that their scholarships, which are awarded yearly, would not be renewed. Spurrier also added that of those six, three players remained with the Gamecocks and at least one could have his scholarship renewed by next week

Well, to me, when he left Florida (GAG) it took a lot of fun out of being a Gator-Hater. And though it chokes in my throat to say it - he IS a good coach - just tough as nails, but so good. It's going to be interesting to watch what all happens at USC over the next 5 or 6 years.

His personality and cockiness have always rubbed me the wrong way, but I respect his ability as a football coach.

I've always liked him as a coach. He does need a real good DC so he doesn't have to worry about that side of the ball, though. All good or great programs are as good as their head coach, period. The single biggest difference in winning and losing is the head coach. Ole ball coach knows how to motivate a bunch of guys and win games.

He does need a real good DC so he doesn't have to worry about that side of the ball,

I followed his every word while he was in Washington cause I'm a big Redskins fan, and as pumped up about him going there, I've never been more disappointed in a head coach. He actually came out to the press and said the reason why they are losing is because his players aren't doing what he tells them to do. What?? He didn't even know half the player's names on defense after his first training camp, and I'll bet he won't make that mistake again, because the players on both sides of the ball gave him no respect. There was a total melt down when he was in DC., and all I know is what I read in the papers, God knows what they said about him in private. I truly believe that he cannot handle losing in any way, he projects his discomfort towards his players. I don't know if he would do that again in College but it sure seemed that way in Washington, there was never a player who came to his defense, and he bolted on them after telling everyone he would be there for three years, win or lose. I actually heard him on Finebaum say he left DC because Snider (owner) told him which quarterback would be starting. Not sure which one he meant but they were all picked by SS and they all sucked, especially his Heisman boy Danny who was worse than Heath Shuler. Snider did everything for him, payed him more money than any other coach (no experience), highest paid staff in the NFL (youngest in NFL), hired the best DC in the country and he blames the freakin owner!! Steve will not be able to handle SC, he doesn't have the character to hold them together through the first few years.

I remember when he predicted Florida would beat Bama by four TD's. I think that was Coach Stallings first year. I thought what a nut he is. That weekend Florida beat us something like 40-6. So instead of hating the guy for being right I just tried to respect him, which is a little difficult with his ego.

Coach Steve Superior is a great coach but more importantly a man of principle. When he has ever had a problem with another coach's recruiting of a player, he has had the character and integrity to call that coach and challenge him on it. (Unlike some other coach in the SEC NE of Tuscaloosa). If that did not work, then he would go to the SEC. This is the correct way to business. A man's way.

I love his one liners and barbs aimed at the big pumpkin.
