Do you think Gene Stallings will ever have the field named after him (Bryant-Denny Stadium at Gene Stallings Field?) It was interesting that Awbarn named theirs after Dye. Just some off season talk.
Personally I think it would sound great: Bryant-Denny Stadium at Gene Stallings Field.

I like Gene Stallings a lot. He coached the only National Championship team, that I remember, at Alabama (I'm 30). I make this point with all respect to Coach Stallings.
The situations at UA and AU are totally different. Pat Dye is arguably the best coach the barn ever had. Coach Stallings is not the best coach Bama has ever had. He was a very good coach at Bama.
I don't see the appeal of naming the field at a stadium that is already named. It seems to be a fad that is going around the country.

I've never cared for the whole field naming thing. It seems pointless to me, like the stadium and the field are two separate entities that have nothing to do with each other.
I personally don't think it will ever happen. It sort of like retiring numbers, we just don't do that sort of thing at Alabama.
No disrespect toward Gene Stallings because I love him and think he did a great job, but I believe Wallace Wade and Frank Thomas would rank ahead of him as greatest coaches at Alabama. Obviously, we all know who number one is.

I agree. Those two coaches were better than Stallings. If it weren't for them we would not be who we are today. Coach Bryant probably wouldn't have played at Bama...imagine that. We'd only have 7 National Championships...assuming we would have won the last 7. I do think that we could name a street or something to that effect after Coach Stallings. I think the new stuff at the stadium will be a great tribute to our great coaches though. It's nice when you can talk about a whole handful of coaches when talking about excellence.

Isn't this why we now have the Walk of Champions - to specifically honor those coaches who won NC's at Bama? You didn't see them proposing an "Ears" Witworth or DuBose statue out there, nor a Shula. I think that's the standard to having your statue out there..... Which I like as I, too, don't favor the So-and-so field at Such-and-such stadium. Its a bit too much for my taste.
Stallings was at the helm at the beginning of our NCAA problems. I like to believe that he just made a mistake, but I don't really care to have the field named after him because of it. I am not saying he is a bad man, but he did cause the university some problems with the Langham thing.
And what is this modern era crap? Is CPB not of the modern era?

I agree with you.
I think having the four statues of Stallings along with Bryant, Wade and Thomas is an outstanding tribute.
I also agree with jthomas666. I guarantee you that Coach Stallings is happier about the weight room being named after John Mark than he ever would be if the field were named after him.
I don't think we'll see the field name for him. I just don't think we'll see it named for anyone.
I think the field naming thing is odd but I do love Coach stallings. Does anyone know how John Mark is doing? I read an artilce a while back but nothing over the past few months.

The Modern Era, is everything from 1990 -- to present day
I'd like to know where all of this hostility comes from??
whenever I display an opinion, It's always flooded with negative, sarcastic comments
I'm trying to participate like everyone else, and I'd appreciate a little less sarcasm, b/c it's hurtful and nobody likes it....
