I can't say for sure if this is why we have recruited so many, but its a good read none the less.

Maybe with JPW that will soon change. I do that teams that incorporate the TE into their passing game tend to get a lot of mismatch advantages in the middle of the field.

I don't know about JPW, but Barnes wasn't afraid to throw to the TE during the A-Day game.

Re: So many tight ends

I've read somewhere that coaches recruit tight ends often because they are big and athletic, something you can use in many positions.

If we can get our OL straightened out where we don't have to keep TE's in to block I would hope CMS would incorporate them in the passing game. They can be a dangerous weapon and next to impossible to stop.....especially in college.

Big A Re: So many tight ends

He seems to be assuming that TE vs LB in a pass situation gives a distinct advantage to the O. Aren't LB's getting pretty fast these days?

Everybody is getting faster these days. But the TE usually is more athletic than a LB and can exploit that on pass routes. LB's are good at tackling but you find very few are just as good at covering receivers as they are tackling. Speed is good but it does the LB no good if he can't cover.

Re: So many tight ends

This thread is interesting because I think there is a movement, especially in the NFL, to a double TE/1 Back set. This formation kind of negates the entire Strongside/Weakside philosophy and shifts the advantage to the Offense because there are so many more mis-matches available because it leaves the Defense in a state of flux in defending this set. Without going into a bunch of X's and O's, you get a alot more favorable matchups in run situations because you can get more hats on defenders without giving away your intentions. It even get's more favorable for the Offense on passing plays because this formation leaves a Defense mostly in a 4 DB Coverage instead of a Nickel with an extra Corner. This will minimize alot of your blitzes and if you have a WR like Prothro that could draw a double team, it puts alot of the coverage of your TE's in the hands of LB's and that clearly favors the TE. Pretty solid formation if you have good TE's.

I think one of the ideas is that as a play develops, a TE may look like he is blocking on a run play, so the DEs and LBs may be trying to get past him to get to the RB, and if, as a result, the TE is relatively open, he presents an attractive outlet for the pass.

Or, if you've already established a running game, the defense may put in bigger, slower, "run stopper" LBs that can't cover as well as the fast guys.

Several years ago...

UT demolished us with their TE, I think his name was Jamie Whitten, or something like that. He was literally dragging our DBs and even our LBs for first downs...
