He had a major problem attending class yet still played. Academics for athletes and Auburn just has not co-existed for a long time now. James Brooks, Brent Fullwood, Bo Jackson, Jeff Burger (plagarism), on and on and on.
This program has to cut corners to be competitive - face it. Otherwise it would be nothing more than a So Miss or Troy on the national scale of football. As has been stated earlier on this board, Auburn and Miss State has probably the most pathetic past among their student-athletes in the conference.
What I find funny is that all schools have their academic issues when it comes to their student-athletes but as the course of history shows Auburn is not even smart enough to devise a system to keep there shenanigans out of public view. You would think with one man running the show down there they would have a well oiled machine going. But no, it is one public relations fiasco after another.
With the increase of info on the internet, the hypersensitivity of the media, jealous academia, and overall emphasis on college athletics, I think it is safe to say that it is harder to bend the rules or be corrupt than it used to be. Bama found out the hard way and is cleaning up its act. I applaud the approach taken now by Dr. Witt, CMM, CMS, and CMG on their attitude towards academics. Unlike UT and Auburn, Bama appears to be ahead of the curve in believing that balance can exist between athletics and academics. I think in the future, the easy road to winning will be doing it the right way on the field and in the classroom. It appears that Bama recognizes this and is headed in that direction.
Staying out of the newspapers at least let's you concentrate on one thing - building your program.

Re: Does anyone remember Brent Fullwood? Jeff Burger?
All I know is that Jeff Burger was one heck of a qb. When he started, they beat us every time...

I remember Fullwood in his senior year stopped going to class the fourth week of the season. The story broke a week or two before their bowl game and Pat Dye being the hardcore disciplinarian he is let him play.
It baffles me why Dye is still on the payroll and the aubie people praise him like a football god.
winning is the sole thing that counts - that and the revenge of Auburn against the whole world. Don't get me wrong, I love to win, but the AU thing is a totally different world, despite what Scabski says...

I agree, Their own professor turned them in and now they are blaming us for this. Right now they are scanning the country like the cry baby little brother trying to find trash to tell mama. Maybe mama will spank big brother and forget junior started the whole thing. I don't think so.

The casual college football fan won't be shocked if Alabama is a ten-win type of team again simply because of the brand name, Alabama is supposed to be good,
No one is going to have a parade for an Alabama team that comes up short of a championship

Because, with the exception of disciplining his team, Pat Dye thought like CPB, talked like CPB and coached alot like CPB.

To have a tradition like ours means that you can't lose your cool; to have tradition like ours means that you always have to show class, even when you are not quite up to it; to have tradition like ours means that you have to do some things that you don't want to do and some you even think you can't do, simply because tradition demands it of you. On the other hand, tradition is the thing that sustains us. Tradition is that which allows us to prevail in ways that we could not otherwise." University President David Matthews talking to an Alabama team in the early 70s.
