Yeah that's being a little bit more realistic. But maybe still not realistic enough.
I agree with you but those were the names that I could come up with. I probably should've left the USC coaches out of the list because they're all relatively "new" in their coaching careers at USC; Sarkisian has been there the longest but he also took a short stint with the Raiders for a year before returning last year. Holt left to coach at Idaho, didn't like it and came back to Carroll when he offered him the defensive coordinator's job.
I can't think of other coaches that can work with the players that we have. I don't want a new "system" coach, like Rodriguez of WVU or Leach of Texas Tech. I want a coach that'll put the best players on the field and will play all types of football at will. Pat Hill has done that at Fresno State, which is a decent program (other than this year). He's also a great motivator and has done a lot at a small program.
Those were the only REALISTIC candidates that I can think of. But first, we need to see what happens with Shula. Maybe he just puts everything together next year (whether it's with new assistants or whatever) and it gets all figured out.

Notwithstanding any staff or philosophical changes that may take place before next year, one does not magically become a leader in the course of one off-season.
IMO there are college coaches and there are NFL coaches and the two do not, for the most part, have a lot in common. Although Saban did well at LSU he had only limited success at Michigan State. He is a professional coach at heart as evidenced by his leaving LSU for the Dolphins. I honestly cannot see him returning to college football unless it was to replace someone like Joe Paterno at Penn State. He is from the West Virginia - Pennsylvania area and would be an excellent fit at PSU. I think our experience with CMS should show us the NFL mindset does not necessarily work at the college level, although it has worked for Pete Carroll at USC who, like Shula was an NFL flop. I have no doubt that Saban would be successful at Alabama but at this point in his career, quite frankly taking the Alabama job would be a step down for him.
With the new facilities and no more sanctions, Bama is a top of the line job now. This is not the same job that it was when Shula was brought in.
You are correct. Fans that believe we cannot attract a top quality coach are mistaken. The sanctions are over in February, so the deterrent is gone.
If the BOT decide to make major changes, there will be plenty of excellent coaches that will take a very hard look at this job. The big question is whether or not a move will be made. I doubt it will happen until the end of the 07 season.

Or Charlie Weis
Or Gene Stallings
Or Tom Coughlin
Or June Jones
Or Les Miles
NFL Coaches, especially coordinators do VERY well in college ranks. The reverse is not as true as many college coaches (especially recent ones) fail in the NFL like Spurrier, Saban and Chan Gailey.
If you're set on firing Shula and want to find a great coach for Alabama, I'd look for an NFL coordinator with some level of connection to the SEC.
I've edited this to include a bit of looking. Check out the resume for a guy named Doug Marrone. Offensive Line Coach (!) and Offensive Coordinator for the Saints. Relatively young (about 38) and has had success every where he's gone. http://www.neworleanssaints.com/coac...fm?coachid=314
But frankly I have always said that I'm giving him through 2007. I've modified that a bit - to me, he has until October 21, 2007. That's the day after the Tennesse game and after we've played FSU and UGA. If we're not bowl-eligible (meaning 6-2 at that point) AND we haven't beaten two of the three teams mentioned at a minimum, I'll change my mind and start writing letters to have him dismissed.

In my opinion, the answer to this thread question is "NO"!!! I'm not even sure who the next coach should be, but I think this is all way too premature.
I would add, as a friend says, "not just no, but he** no!!" to the original question about Saban. He carries way too much baggage. I don't know about the rest, but I've had my fill of nc2a sanctions. We're going to have to be very careful in the recruiting arena for several years to come.......just one of CMS's "plusses".

I agree with your assessment here. The only way CMS leaves, short term, is voluntarily.........which is still a possibility.

That is the one name that excites me when I hear it. He is a mean sob and will not take anything off the BOT, Fans, or players.
So was Ray Perkins. ROFL!
Honestly though, I've seen a lot of folks clamoring for Saban. And he's a good coach to be sure. But I just don't see it. Why would Saban leave a National Champion LSU team with all the support in the world, go to Miami and then come back here to a struggling bama team complete with angry fans who pick apart his every move? Seriously he had it made at LSU. He must have left because of the challenge to coach in the NFL. And he hasnt been there long enough to get his program in gear yet. So I think he'd probably want to stay at Miami for awhile longer.
i just don't see how. he makes about 4 mil ayear and as much as i would like to think we have the best school in the universe, there is just no way we come up with that kind of cash. he would be the highest paid coach in college by a long shot
