Interesting and very true, especially the part I put in bold type: | Quote: | | | | But not at the risk of making a mistake. One thing Witt does not want to do is make a decision without a clear idea of the ramifications.
Among Witt's considerations are the $4 million it would take to buy out the remainder of Shula's contract, not to mention financial obligations to current assistant coaches.
Then there is the concern whether Alabama can hire a coach who would be considered a "home run," a name that would make it easier to tolerate the embarrassment of having to admit that Mike Shula was a mistake.
Witt knows if he can't get that coach, if the school might be forced to hire another Mike Shula, then it might make more sense to stick with the Mike Shula it has and work with him to make needed improvements in the program. Interestingly, several trustees shared the same anecdote about how former coach Dennis Franchione supposedly told Moore that he thought the best he could do in 2006 was 3-8, or maybe 4-7, suggesting that perhaps Shula exceeded expectations by going 6-6 this past season.
Maybe. But it would be hard to convince most Alabama fans of that today.
One thing about Alabama fans: They want to believe in whoever is in charge of the football program.
Which is why, more than anything, they just want to be assured that someone is, indeed, in charge. Ray Melick's column appears Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Didn't think I'd ever hear myself saying this, but it seems like Melick is the voice of sanity in this issue right now.... http://www.al.com/sports/birminghamn...680.xml&coll=2

There is no way to spin this season's 6-6 record as "exceeding expectations." Given the weak non-conference schedule, Coach Shula should have been able to sleepwalk to a 7-5 record. 7-5 was the absolute minimum, and Coach Shula failed to reach that.

What Melick and all of the other "gurus" dont realize is that there is more going on here than winning and losing football games. Its about lack of discipline and subsequently, lack of control. I cant recall ever seeing so many personal fouls as i did this year. The players in Shula's face to make a decision? Yea, try doing that to Gene Stallings and see what happens. Obviously, lack of discipline and structure certainly contribute to why we are 0-19 when trailing into the 4th quarter. Ray Melick is NOT the voice of reason people.

IF we get a TD before half time of the MSU game...
IF we don't turn the ball over against UF...
IF we don't fumble twice against the barn...
and...
IF we were 7-5, are we happy with that!?!?

Add in that there is no guarrantee that whomever you hire will succeed far better than Shula has, and the BOT and MM and President Witt are facing quite the conundrum!!!!! I hate the fact that we are even in this situation. But take out the emotion and look at this logically. We may have to settle for one more year of Shula. The board can set conditions and ask Shula to resign to soften the financial blow (hopefully)!!!

You bring out some good points but i am looking at it logically. If Shula is there one more year, we will have bigger problems that money in my opinion. Also, you said that there is no guarentee of getting someone better than Shula. If there is a coach available that has college head coaching experience, guess what, hes got more experience!
