I"m in favor of going after a young coach. I don't think Stallings is young enough to spend the time it takes to recruit. I also remember how in 92 we were only one play away from losing almost all the games. I don't think it is possible to have a defense in this time period that can win consistently.
For those who are not sure about Paul Johnson he has
won a total of six National Championships and he has a
long history of taking nothing and make something out
of it.
If you give Paul Johnson the chance you might be surprised
at what the man can do.
God please...how awesome would that be? Just give us two or three good years under Stallings and we WOULD be back! After that, the job would be a much easier job to fill.
Yeah, and after the 2 years we could sustain our recent reputation for having 4 or 5 coaches each decade. Pulllllease people, that would be the worst move possible. You can almost see the offensive skill player recruits heading for the exits. We just need a 40ish-50ish coach (and Mal will get one) who knows what he is doing, and everything will be fine.

JUST WIN

Bob Stoops to a reporter after Tide's narrow loss in Norman: "Was I surprised at how close the game was? No. That wasn't East Popcorn State out there....that was Alabama!"
It'll never happen, of course. But, we could and have done a heckuva lot worse than rehire CGS. I don't mind being bored by his offense again all the way back to another NC. Stallings for another five years while he mentors and grooms our next head coach, possibly a coordinator of his choosing (basically let him hire our next HC) doesn't sound too bad. Five years of quality coaching, a new HC in 4 or 5 years hired by someone competent to do it,and stability. How does that sound? The only possible problem could be that biased, crooked, gestapo oraganization we all love.
If we are just going to hire Gene Stallings on an interim basis, why not just keep Joe Kines and let him coach for a year or two. But there is still time in this to get a good coach. Patience is a virtue, let's have it!!
If we have to go with an interim head coach please don't kid yourselves Gene Stallings would be much better than Joe Kines. Stallings did have boring offenses but his defenses were usually filled with play makers and last time I checked he won 10 games a year (that's not boring). Also before you write off skilled players coming to UA if GS was hired think about David Palmer, Sherman Williams, David Lassic and Shaun Alexander (not to mention Curtis). Those guys were playmakers. I don't think this would ever happen but I think MUCH worse things could happen than giving Stallings 2-3 years (like being turned down for WVU or hiring another Shula/Dubose type)

Anyone concerned he's been out of coaching for almost 10 years? If we were doing the interim HC deal, wouldn't Kines be the better pick? Also, what would recruits do if they knew we only had Stallings for 2-3 years.
IF WE WANTED STABILITY SHOULDN'T WE HAVE KEPT SHULA?
Hiring Stallings doesn't make sense unless he commits to you for five years, at least.
Also, it may not be possible -- until Feb. 1, 2007, any coach Alabama hires has to pass a NCAA background check. The NCAA can stop us from hiring some people or at least placing a show-cause order on the hire. Because Stallings was a part of two separate NCAA investigations here (the 1993 case, and the 2001 case via the Kenny Smith information that was let in around the statute of limitations), I don't know that he would pass muster in Indianapolis.
Back to the five-year thing, if Alabama hires a coach for two years, recruiting goes in the toilet in a bad way. The coach can't assure players and their families that he would be there throughout the career, and yes, that matters A LOT. Let's say we kept Stallings for two years and then hired Mike Leach, just as an example. There is nothing similar about those two coaches' offenses, and any fullback or tight end that Stallings recruited would immediately be out of a job.
And before anyone says it, yes, Stallings is a better coach than most, but all coaches have to have talent to win and Stallings is no different.
I can tell you with about 99 percent certainty that we won't go the "extended interim" route, and if we do, it would almost certainly be with Joe Kines, who is 10 years younger.
My prediction is that Alabama has a new coach in place no later than Jan. 7, and it won't be Kines, Stallings or any other interim coach.
Everything he said, plus the following:
Coach Stallings has not coached a down since 1996. Ten years doesn't sound like much when you're as good as he was, but please remember... he never wore a headset.
I hate to say that the game has passed the man by, but if he started 2007 the same way he started 1990, the attacks from both the fans and the media would be merciless. We'd be accused from inside and out of attempted ressurrection, and we'd be guilty as charged.
