Coach Stallings has not coached a down since 1996. Ten years doesn't sound like much when you're as good as he was, but please remember... he never wore a headset.
I hate to say that the game has passed the man by, but if he started 2007 the same way he started 1990, the attacks from both the fans and the media would be merciless. We'd be accused from inside and out of attempted ressurrection, and we'd be guilty as charged.
Yeah but good coaching never goes out of style, football will always be football.
If this happens (which I am sure it won't), this would make Alabama look extremely desperate and that we couldn't find ANYONE to come and coach. Also, I doubt that if GS came in for a couple of years that we could go get someone like Mike Leach because his name surfaces for EVERY open job out there and he would surely be gone. I haven't done any research on Paul Johnson personally but I have seen enough post from you guys to know that he does win and has won in the past. Mike Leach has turned TT into a consistant winner and has turned out some great QB numbers. Personally I feel that although GS is a great coach in the long history of Alabama football, he should stay in the history books. It's a backwards move in an extremely important time in which we should be looking ahead.
Gene Stallings was great for Crimson Tide Football. He won the old fashion way. But, his age is against him at this point in his life. Issues I see:
1) Stamina to spend 14 to 16 hour days coaching.
2) Recruiting at the college level is a lot of hard work. Could he do it at his age? It would be a challenge. Potential recruits want an assurance that they are committing to a school that will have their coach in place for their 4 years of eligibility. This could be an issue with these young men.
Bama fans are a restless bunch, short on patience. This thing could get ugly for GS if he did not hit the ground with instant results.
I believe Mal Moore has a long list of potential young or middle age coaches that could do very well at the Capstone. If, for some reason it does not work out, GS would have to be considered as part of a back up strategy. It is too early in the search to consider hiring a 72 year old man for this pressure cooker. I can't support this idea.
<< I can tell you with about 99 percent certainty that we won't go the "extended interim" route, and if we do, it would almost certainly be with Joe Kines, who is 10 years younger. >>
I loved Gene Stallings, but I would be just as happy to have Joe Kines around for the next 5 years--or however long he was able/wanted to fight the battles. I would trust him to hire a really good OC and keep his hands off the offense, because his whole history has been with defense.
Who are these big name coaches? Can't get one now!! Funny how everybody wants Stallings back but don't want Johnson because he runs the ball. We should go with PJ.
i don't think this will or should happen, but would you turn down a 72 year old Bear Bryant just because of his age?
It wouldn't be the same group that gives a contract extension to a coach after after his 3rd year on the job then fires him after 4yrs.
Then everybody says that shula was the only one UA could get. If I remember correctly UA wouldn't even talk to parcells. CGS must think an awful lot of UA and CPBB to even offer to come back and coach. The real sad part is that half the UA fans don't know how fortunate they would be to have CGS on the sidelines.

Interestingly, it seemed the louder the drumbeat grew from the national media, which almost in unison aimed its poison darts at Saban for his unseemly stream of denials, the more united and defiant Tide fans grew in support of their man
Stallings now would not be a good idea for the obvious reasons. After Fran and Price, yes, and he made it known then he was willing to do it. But it amazes me how many are complaining about his offense, just a play away from losing, predictable in his play calling, etc. The one thing he was predictable at was winning. Seventy wins in 7 seasons. I enjoyed being bored watching the defense. Who cares how he got there? I could care less if Bama scored no more than 3 points in every game next year, as long as the opponents scored less than 3 points each game. If you love wild offenses, go become a Boise St or Lousiville fan. If you like winning, stick with Bama. This program has been winning for year and will again. Winning began long before Coach Bryant and it isn't over yet.
Ah yes .... the PAST.
The good ol' days. Tradition, history .. and that oh-still-so-fresh-in-our-minds 1992 National Championship.
Man, I will just never understand peoples' fixation on Alabama and the past. The past is what got us Mike DuBose and Mike Shula. Do we really need another temporary fix ... provided my a much older man who hasn't coached a down in more than a decade?
And if CGS turns us down, maybe we can talk CMS into returning.....
Let's get real and get a coach for the future. Let's be patient and let MM do something he wouldn't let CMS do, finish this job. Then maybe we can get back to talking FOOTBALL again.
Stallings for another five years while he mentors and grooms our next head coach, possibly a coordinator of his choosing (basically let him hire our next HC) . . . How does that sound?
It sounds like you're asking us to rehire Mike Dubose in five years.
