we seem to already have Gene Stallings winning a national championship and turning the program back where we all want it to be....that's exactly why he should NOT be the coach
Stallings was a good coach and we did win the NC. It was also the time we went on our first probation and started the downfall. You can blame Dubose all you want for our NCAA misery, but it started on Coach Stallings watch after the `92 NC.

Howell Raines, a Washington correspondent for the New York Times.
i love GS, but all i can think of is joe gibbs' return to the redskins. i'm not a skins fan, but it's pretty painful living up here and having to watch and read about the debacle in d.c. you can see it in gibbs' face during post-games that he's thinking "for cripes sake, what was i thinking coming back?" i'd hate for that to happen to stallings.
at his age, and with the state of the program, i'm not sure he would have the time or the energy required to get bama back on top.
as far as i can see it, it's going to take whoever the new coach is (considering implementation of new systems, players learning new positions, recruiting the right players, etc) at least 2 years to get things going. that would put GS at what, 75 or 76. that's getting pretty long in the tooth to take on the grind of the sec. but if he were 10 years younger, i'd say bring it on.
If you think Shula & Co had a predictable boring offense, GS was toss sweep right just like the Darby up the middle.
Fans wanted him gone - The entrie year he was trashed for barely winning and his offense was behind the times...etc all the way up the NC
The defensive talent made that season work (not the DC) they populated the NFL with defensive talent.
Gene Stallings was not really appreciated until after the fact - I think GS being HC is a terrible idea. He should stay out and enjoy being appreciated.
One thing I bet we could count on, the players would execute those predictable plays and we would kick some folks a... more than not.
As for the fans wanting him gone, I don't think you can say the amjority did. I for one was shocked at the way the AD (Bockrath) handled the situation after the loss to MSU.
Question is, Does Stallings and Moore gee haw? Does Stallings and Paul Jr. get along. I doubt it.
I don't understand your comment, " he wasn't appreciated until it was too late"... He just enjoy being apprciated....
I think Stallings misses it and loves the University of Alabama. We should at least talk to him. He also stated that no one had consulted him on his thoughts; sad, that one of the great coaches we have had is not even consulted.
For those who are not sure about Paul Johnson he has
won a total of six National Championships and he has a
long history of taking nothing and make something out
of it.
If you give Paul Johnson the chance you might be surprised
at what the man can do.
My wish is we will find someone who can take SOMETHING and make something GREAT out of it. A play on words, but Bama is not a waste land, podunk program without talent. It needs someone that knows football and can coach and will coach.
If we are just going to hire Gene Stallings on an interim basis, why not just keep Joe Kines and let him coach for a year or two. But there is still time in this to get a good coach. Patience is a virtue, let's have it!!
I sure like Kines as a DC, but lets keep this as an absolute last resort option.
I love Gene Stallings also. I would like to know that he is being consulted rather than someone like we apparently did with Ray Perkins when Shula was hired. Iknow.... Stallings was associated with the recruiting violations; that does not mean that he is dummy when coming to know coaches.
Stallings now would not be a good idea for the obvious reasons. After Fran and Price, yes, and he made it known then he was willing to do it. But it amazes me how many are complaining about his offense, just a play away from losing, predictable in his play calling, etc. The one thing he was predictable at was winning. Seventy wins in 7 seasons. I enjoyed being bored watching the defense. Who cares how he got there? I could care less if Bama scored no more than 3 points in every game next year, as long as the opponents scored less than 3 points each game. If you love wild offenses, go become a Boise St or Lousiville fan. If you like winning, stick with Bama. This program has been winning for year and will again. Winning began long before Coach Bryant and it isn't over yet.
Bless you! Well said and Merry Christmas to you and yours!
Stallings recomended fran.
fran = Good coach pityful man, knows football, lacks character.
"If" Perk was consulted and was on the Shula side,
Shula = poor coach, good man, not HC material, loyal.
I'll have to give Perk at least as good a grade as Stallings on that.
Perk fired Mal;
Stallings brought mal back.
Perk is WAY ahead on this one.
Stallings was "on watch" for the first probation and sanctions,
and was involved in some of the things investigatd that led to the second round.
Perk was not.
Perk 2-0-1
Gene 0_2-1
If we go any farther it will only get worse for Bebes!
