Last night after the game I had a long discussion with a friend of mine who is a big Arkansas fan. He could not stop talking about how impressed he was with JPW -- his leadership, his determination, his toughness, and his confidence. He loved the way JPW "took over the game" at the end and was "totally focused" on leading his team to a comeback victory. He didn't care about his mechanics, whether he was throwing off his back foot, whether he was staring down his receivers, or any of that. All he saw was a leader who refused to give up and did whatever he had to to bring home the win.
It occurred to me that we often get too wrapped up in wanting to see a young kid do everything perfectly. JPW isn't a seasoned pro QB. He's a kid who's learning a new system and adjusting to a whole new mindset with our current staff. He hasn't played perfectly in any of our first 3 games. But he has played well enough to lead us to a 3-0 record. And I'm sure he will improve as the season progresses.
I think he is more comfortable in the shotgun. He seems to see the field better. If we could run more out of the shotgun to confuse the defenses, but I'm sure Coach Saban knows what he doing. Coach Saban didn't look a bit surprised by what JPW did on that last drive. I think coach Saban knew he could do it all along. He may even be hiding something from our future opponents.
I think a balanced discussion of the game is healthy as long as it doesn't linger over into the unfair criticism of players, coaches, etc. JPW earned his stripes last night by overcoming some adversity. That is a mark of a champion. I believe that game winning drive will continue to build confidence in him and the team to benefit us later in the season against tougher opponents. I'm just concerned about the under and overthrowing of passes. Which I guess ties into the throwing off the back foot. Aside from the last minute drive, many of his completed passes this season have been the receiver just making an outstanding athletic effort. DJ Hall is awesome and made some great plays to make some of those passes "complete".
We all know that these things are being worked on and will continue to be worked on. But as long as they continue to exist during games there is the potential that they will begin to cost us. Especially as we get into the tougher part of our schedule. Even during wins fans see all aspects of the games. It's hard to not see or ignore issues that continue to come up during games just because the game resulted in a win. Because all it takes is a loss for those things that were first "nit picky" to now become an issue. Remember 2005? People kept saying that something is wrong with our OL and they kept getting bashed about being too "nit picky" and "bashing the team" etc. But low and behold after the LSU and Auburn games look at how the mood swung.
I'm so happy we won and am proud of JPW and how he over came the adversity. And I know (from being a member on here for a while now) how easy it is for us fans to cross the line, focus too much on the negatives of a game and begin to "pile on" a player at an unreasonable rate. That's why I understand why mods are quick to step in and temper the "mood" of threads, especially when they are about concerns that fans see from our team. But is it possible to still be proud of the team, JPW and still talk about the things that need to be fixed to carry this team to the next level without it being pretty much labeled as "unjustified"? I've seen tons of praise about this game and JPW. Balanced with some healthy expressions of concerns regarding JPW's continuing struggles.
Good post, nothing wrong with seeing the good and the bad in a victory and evaluating both. Crimson-coating the performance does not accomplish anything IMO.
Much more good than bad in JPW's performance, but there are some things he will definitely need to improve on to beat the LSU's of the world. Arky did not look strong at DB position yesterday. I look at this game as a huge step in the right direction for JPW, but by no means is he near where he needs to be yet. Good news is he is getting better and he stepped up in a big game.
I mainly have a problem with members who only post the negatives and never take time to add a bit of praise. That's no way to raise a child, train a dog or be a fan.

Amen Bayou, amen.

Im with you all Ive heard out of some fans on this board is constant nitpicking and .....ing about floating balls and mechanics. Some of these have probably never thrown a nerf football much less QB'd in a D1 football game against a pretty damn good opponent. I guess we can get Shula back in here so you can watch the pretty footwork buzzard. All Ive got to say is
Go get'em John Parker keep playing hard. To hell with the ones that dont like it.
JPW is not a pro QB. He has work to do as does every member of our team. Each player needs to get better so as to help this team in our process to get better. If we had the defense we had in 05 there would be less pressure on our offense to carry the team. I would criticize the running game way before the passing game on last nights performance, but I won't. I'll just enjoy the win.
I'm loving the game winning drive, but I have to say that i think JPW tries to thread the needle too much. I love when he hits the little intermediate passes and wears them down. When he gets the loft out and his vision gets better, he's going to be nice.

You might want to read the board a bit more and get a clue as to what you're talking about in regards to my opinion of JPW. Either you haven't been reading the board for more than three games or you haven't been paying attention for the entire off season.

The air he puts under those passes turns the route into a hail mary/jump ball situation. Better teams will pick every one of them off all day. The kid has a good are because there were passes last night he fired across the field. He just floats the ball too much. And we got do something about that little throwing off the back foot!!!
He has got to stand in there on the blitzes and put the ball on the hot receiver. We are going to see the blitz until JPW shows he can burn it.
He's got a very good arm and made plenty of good throws. He threw some outs all the way across field. Just needs to step into his throws and not float them out there. Also, needs to consisently look straight up the field when he first drops back, except for hot reads when he does not have the time.
