The stats from today's scrimmage have been released. Click here.
Hitting the high points:
Wilson had a bit better day at 17-33 for 216 yards, but McElroy had yet another bad day. 7-19 for 48 yards is never good, regardless of how you look at it. Nick Fanuzzi had a much better day -- 9-15 for 140 yards and a TD -- so maybe he'll push McElroy.
Roy Upchurch had a big day: 11 carries for 80 yards and two touchdowns. His touchdowns were of 46 and 16 yards. Grant didn't do as well, only 5 carries for 22 yards.
Jeramie Griffin had a two-yard touchdown run. I suppose we are using him as a goal line tailback. According to some practice observers, he absolutely steamrolled some poor defensive back in the process.
Darius Hanks had 35-yard touchdown catch after taking a quick slant to the house.
The receivers all posted pretty good stats. McCoy, Alexander, and Hanks all had pretty good days.
Tiffin nailed a 51 yard field goal, and the punting was much improved. Fitzgerald averaged over 45 yards per punt, including one downed inside the 20.
A few guys on defense had very good days, including Rolando McClain, Alfred McCullough, and Corey Reamer.

I think to fully realize the potential of our WRs NF MUST establish himself as the starter or co-starter. Superior arm strength is not in JPW's arsenal of weapons and we need someone to really stretch the field vertically to keep the running lanes and underneath passing routes open.
Also Barron Huber was playing LB in the 2nd or 3rd team defense, while also calling the shots on Special Teams.
There was a lot of teaching to the newly turned LBs like Johns, Reamer, and Huber. They all have the speed but are still learning many new skills like anticipating and reading the offense. The coaches were yelling specifically at this men trying to get them in position.

17-33 (52%). It was a problem last year and in two scrimmages this year it continues to be a problem. He's got to find a way to bring this up to at least the upper 50 percentile but the target is 60%. This where Jim McElwain is going to have to prove he's different than MA. MA couldn't get through to JPW in this area, or many others to be honest.

Alabama Football Coach Nick Saban puts a Catch 22 on sportswriters. He doesn't allow reporters to watch his team scrimmage. He then passes out statistics and says the media will twist them. Obviously, a reporter can't report on information he doesn't have, so one can't know if a player is working with the first team against the third, the third against the first, etc.
Alabama went to Bryant-Denny Stadium Saturday for its second scrimmage of spring pactice. Next Saturday Bama will be back in the stadium for the annual A-Day Game, which begins at 2 p.m. CDT.

We've been under-utilizing the TE for years (at least partly because of the pass protection weaknesses of the OL), and it looks like maybe, just maybe, McElwain might be the end of that. Hopefully, the OL will improve enough that we don't need the TE as a sixth blocker so much.
Also, Saban's comments about Upchurch were telling. Based on those comments, I'd say Roy is our best performer at RB on the field, but is on his last chance off the field.

I wouldn't read too much into that just yet. Wilson had a bad first scrimmage -- so did the offense as a whole, though -- but he looked pretty good yesterday. The truth is, if Wilson were lighting up the defense with 60%+ completion percentage and 250-300 yards, given it is the Spring and we are installing a new offense, it would probably be a very bad sign about the defense more than anything else.

I think Fanuzzi could become backup. McElroy ain't done .....
Fanuzzi may be able to make the move, but it's hard to say. At this point, Fanuzzi is probably as close to getting passed by Darrah as he is overtaking McElroy.
Either way -- barring a huge surge by Fanuzzi in the final five practices -- if Fanuzzi does pass McElroy, it will have more to do with McElroy playing so terrible thus far than it will Fanuzzi making any serious improvement in his own right.
-Roy was working it hard yesterday.
-Also the 1st teams did compete against each other a few times so some of JP's problems were caused by the defense.
-Jimmy Johns does have some kinks to work out but he can go up against an OL, and can make a solid tackle. He has good speed but still needs to keen up his ability for seeing the ball and anticipating where it will be.
-Fanuzzi did look better than McElroy too

Anyone know what exactly what went on in the two Upchurch TD scampers? (Were they sprung by great individual efforts, or great blocking? ... or bad D?)

The coach said that Roy Upchurch, the leading rusher in the scrimmage, had not bee with the first offense the previous week and added “If he doesn’t do some things he won’t be next week. Not that I’m sending a message.”

first one was a zone stretch play. it was good blocking but a very good run.
the 46 yard scamper was on a 3rd and 1 and it was an inside zone play. Great blocking got him to the secondary and the safety tried to arm tackle him. Then he just outran everyone.
