re: 2009 Allstate Sugar Bowl - Alabama vs. Utah: Alabama Falls to Utah, 31-17
This has to be the craziest quote I have ever heard:
" Utah's crowd in the Superdome will number about one-fourth of that Fiesta Bowl gathering, as a result of the travel costs involved. Yet the Ute players were impressed by the turnout for the rally at their headquarters near the French Quarter.
"I can't wait to see all this red in the seats, instead of the purple stuff," said defensive back Brice McCain, referring to Alabama's shade of crimson. "
NEW ORLEANS, La. - No. 4 Alabama battled back from an early 21-0 deficit Friday, cutting its match against No. 6 Utah to 21-17 in the second half, but the Crimson Tide was ultimately unable to overcome the deficit, falling to the Utes 31-17 in the 75th Allstate Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. Alabama goes to 12-2 on the season while Utah finishes the season at 13-0.
Utah scored 21 first-quarter points, capitalizing on a John Parker Wilson interception and getting a pair of touchdown passes from Brian Johnson to take a 21-0 lead into the second quarter. Alabama responded with 17 unanswered points, including a 73-yard punt return for a touchdown by Javier Arenas, the sixth of his career, to cut the score to 21-10 at halftime.
A fumble on Utah's first possession of the third quarter gave Alabama the ball in the Utes' territory, and a 4-yard touchdown pass from Wilson to junior Glen Coffee closed the drive and cut the lead to 21-17 with 11:14 to go in the third. Utah, however, closed the game on a 10-0 run, getting a 28-yard touchdown pass from Johnson in the third and a 28-yard field goal to close the scoring in the fourth quarter.

While the University of Alabama football team pulled off an undefeated regular season by not giving up big plays and shutting down the run defensively, it ran into something it should have seen coming Friday night at the Sugar Bowl — a hot quarterback and throw-at-all-costs mentality.
Utah used the combination to tally 336 passing yards and pull off a 31-17 upset at the Louisiana Superdome.

No one saw this coming. With two games to play in the 2008 football season, Alabama was thinking national championship. By the time the 2009 Sugar Bowl game was over Friday night, no one in the Crimson Tide camp knew what to think.
Alabama fell behind Utah by three touchdowns in the first quarter and could never overcome that chasm as the Utes of the Mountain West Conference completed an undefeated season with a 31-17 upset of Bama in the 75th annual Sugar Bowl Friday night in the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans.

Take nothing away from Utah’s victory in the Sugar Bowl on Friday night. Take nothing away from the Utes’ undefeated season, a singular and noteworthy accomplishment.
But the Alabama team the Utes defeated in the Sugar Bowl — a team without Andre Smith — was not quite the same Alabama team that went through its own regular season with a perfect record and spent a month as the No. 1 team in the land.
Or it was the same team as it was in the previous game without Smith, one that struggled against Tulane and required special-teams scoring for Alabama to win.

Now Javier Arenas has beaten David Palmer in another category.
The popular Palmer, called the "Deuce" because he worn No. 2, owned many of the punt return records at Alabama before Arenas arrived in 2006, including one for most career touchdowns. One of his, a touchdown in the Blockbuster Bowl, didn't count in his career total of four because bowl accomplishments were included in NCAA statistics at the time.
Arenas, who had an Independence Bowl record 86-yard return for a touchdown against Oklahoma State in 2006, bested Palmer again with his second bowl return for a touchdown.

Oh my. Did this guy actually see it coming? I suppose, if you're superstitious. He's 1 for 3 and batting 1.000 so far...

NEW ORLEANS — Torch lamps and candles were beginning to flicker to life as night fell on Jackson Square. It was the same time of day, in the same place I had met a witch named Brigitte six years earlier.
In my first encounter with the dark arts, I sought her to inquire about the futures of John Stockton and Karl Malone. This time I was in the French Quarter to learn the Utes' chances in the Sugar Bowl.
