As it stands now coaches that have a vote in the coaches poll are required by the AFCA as part of an agreement to be included in the BCS standings to vote for the BCS champion as their number one team in the final poll. After that anything goes. Now, at least two coaches have come out and said that if there is any way possible they are going to break rank and vote for a team not playing in the BCS championship.
Texas coach Mack Brown said the Longhorns deserve to be in the split national championship discussion after Monday's 24-21 win over Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl.
"Yes," Brown said. "I wasn't sure before, but Friday morning I'm going to vote Texas No. 1 because I think this is the best team in the country."
Brown voted the Longhorns No. 2 behind Florida in the final regular season USA Today coaches' poll.
Utah thinks it should be national champion. In fact, coach Kyle Whittingham said he would vote the Utes No. 1 Thursday night in the final USA TODAY coaches top 25.
Should he vote his team No. 1, it will be tabulated. But it would go against the policy set by the American Football Coaches Association, whose members vote in the poll, of naming the winner of the BCS title game the national champ.
"Anytime a coach is 13-0, he certainly has strong feelings and should have," AFCA executive director Grant Teaff said Sunday. "But that's not what the system is and what we agreed to. . . . This poll is not, since 1998, to select the national champion. The winner of the game is the winner of the (BCS) trophy. Which means the coaches do not vote for No. 1, they vote for No. 2 down."
Teaff said he would send a reminder about the policy to the 61 voters this week.

I don't know if it will end up looking like that, but if Florida wins, they are going to be the champions in virtually every respectable poll.
If Oklahoma beats Florida, then I am sure there will be some Texas sympathizers who give them a vote, but I still think Oklahoma would get the nod.
If the coach violates their agreement, then they (and that school) should lose their votes in that poll in the future for at least 20 the next years. So, do they want to cast a futile ballot now and lose the ability to possibly impact the future?
If Florida wins, they are #1 and if Oklahoma wins, they are #1. This is the system we have and unless it is changes, we will have coaches thinking their team is #1.
I love it. The more controversy about this pitiful thing called the BCS the better I like it. I wish more coaches would break ranks and vote for somebody else.
There was one year he did not vote for the BCSCG winner and if I remember correctly, he voted against the SEC and LSU won the BCSCG that year.

If Alabama is not playing in the BCS title game who cares who wins, or who votes for whom after the game. Not that I care, but IMO I still believe Texas got hosed.

Can I ask why you would not want a playoff? Why should Div. I College Football be the only College sport (or the only sport in the world) without a true Champion determined on the field?????
