I've been closely following the Tide since 1969. So many favorite players, but most of mine would come from those my early days when I idolized them.

Players like...

Johnny Musso - Coach Bryant once said ""Johnny can do everything. He's a great runner, blocker and passer. If we let him, he'd be a great defensive back, too. Last year he had to run his own interference and he still gained over 1,100 yards. The ideal situation would be Musso running with Musso up front blocking for him."

Scott Hunter
Alvin Samples
Jim Bunch
John Hannah
Jim Krapf
Tom Surlas
Dave Brungard
Wilbur Jackson
E J Junior
Joe LaBue
Steve Bisceglia

Even Neb Hayden was a hero to me.

and a whole lot of other players that only the old timers here would recognize.

Re: Who are some of Your FAV. Bama Players

What makes me happy looking at these names is remembering when I was just old enough to go outside in my front yard and pretend like I was (insert name here) throwing a TD, running for a TD, or catching a TD. I spent many a halftime being Joe Namath, Gary Hollingsworth, Johnny Musso, David Palmer, etc. Those are the memories I love the most about my youth and Alabama football. God might not have given me the body to play for the Tide...but He gave me the heart to love her through thick and thin!

Re: Who are some of Your FAV. Bama Players

I've had about five favorite players per Bama team, per year, since 1961..
so my list is approximately 240 players long.. so here we go....
(1) nah I won't do that to ya.....lol

My favorite player of all is Johnny Musso. I admired him so much that I wore 22 as a running back on my junior high team. I don't think we've ever had a better all around back as far as running and blocking. And he was a leader.

Next would be Snake- I just loved watching him play both running and passing. I went to every home game in 66 and that's still my favorite team of all.

There just simply too many to mention but those are definitely my top two.

Re: Who are some of Your FAV. Bama Players

I'm 66 years old, yeah I know, that's old! But I became a Bama fan in '58. With the media not being what it is now, I relied mostly on radio to just hear the games. Wow, all the players from back then to the present, it's hard to remember even some of them.
Pat Trammell
Paul Crane
Johnny Musso
Ray Abbrusze (ms)
John and Charlie Hannah
Tommy Wilcox
Snake Stabler
Ozzie Newsome
John Mitchell.
This is just a few that I can think of, but there are many more. Hell, everybody that played for the Tide is my favorite player! Just a lot left unmentioned.

Re: Who are some of Your FAV. Bama Players

I'm almost as old as the guy posting above me and I'm at the point that I don't even try any more to compose a list of favs. TNTC (too numerous to count). Enjoy reading the others though....

Re: Who are some of Your FAV. Bama Players

I have a corn on my foot that's older than some of these members on here,LOL.

A few players over the years come to mind:
Jay Barker..nothing but a winner.
Leroy Cook..the meanest player i ever saw.
Johnny Musso..childhood idol.
David Palmer..best offensive player in my lifetime.
Tommy Wilcox..one of the smartest playes i ever saw on defense.
Wilbur Jackson..hometown hero from Oz.
Major Ogilvie..had a nose for the endzone.
Kevin Turner..a huge heart and versatile player.
George Teague...92 NC game..enough said.
John Sullins...had a nasty streak and very underrated LB,IMO.
Shannon Brown...always seemed to be hurt, but always gave it 100%.
DeMeco Ryans..he epitomize what a college football player should be.
Richard Todd..another childhood hero.
Steadman Shealy..a truly a great leader.
Joey Jones..he made some of the most spectacular catches i've ever seen.
Mike Shula..the 85 Auburn and Georgia games gets him on this list.
Shaun Alexander..great leader and the greatest running back at Alabama,IMO.
Brodie Croyle..his love for Alabama and had the strongest arm i've ever seen.
Johnny Davis...one man could not bring him down and a bull of a man.
Jim Kraph..one of my Dad's favorite players. This guy could pile drive you to the ground back in the day.
ROLL TIDE!!

Re: Who are some of Your FAV. Bama Players

My favorite from when I was a student was Steadman Shealy. One of the assistant coaches, Louis Campbell, named his son Steadman. When a coach names his son after a player that tells you something.

Other favorites are Keith Pugh, Walter Lewis, Rocky Colburn, and Major Ogilvie.

Re: Who are some of Your FAV. Bama Players

I went to school with Demeco and he absolutely was the perfect example of what a STUDENT-athlete should be. Not to mention it seemed like every Saturday he was in on countless tackles and at the end of the day was as humble a guy as you will ever meet.

Beyond him, I liked David Palmer, Derrick Thomas, Antonio Langham and of course current Tiders Rolando McClain and Julio Jones.

Re: Who are some of Your FAV. Bama Players

Bobby Humphrey
David Palmer
Steadman Shealy
Kerry Goode
Lane Bearden - injured his leg and punted anyway... would really lay the wood.
Shaun Alexander
Cornelius Bennett
Derrick Thomas
Chris Samuels
Brodie Croyle (what a horrible time to be the QB at Bama)
Tyrone Prothro
Curry and Copeland... heck, the entire '92 defense
Javier Arenas
Rashad Johnson
DeMeco Ryans
Van Tiffin
Mike Shula
Gary Hollingsworth
.. I'm tired of typing, but could go on and on...

Last edited by CraigD; June 7th, 2009 at 10:19 PM. Reason: got Bearden's name from the post below. Thanks.

Big A Re: Who are some of Your FAV. Bama Players

Of course, I love them all. But if I had to pick favorites, here are some that jump to mind:

Derrick Thomas
George Teague
Jay Barker
Shaun Alexander
Major Ogilvie (probably my first favorite player...I was 8-9 when he was playing)
Tyrone Prothro
Lane Bearden (I know, I know...a punter...but playing on that knee when we all would have understood if he didn't was inspiring)
Antonio Langham - despite the trouble he brought with him

I guess I could go on forever too. Like I said, I love them all.
