And on a separate note, beware our rival posters. It might do 'ya some good to find out who they are and what they take back to their home message boards. Just sayin'. Posted via Mobile Device
A. J. McCarron has not been as enigmatic as Star Jackson, yet his stock seems to have been up and down, finally settling into about a 5.9 or 6.0 by Rivals. You may recall that Rivals started out predicting that McCarron might be 5-star (6.1).
I saw McCarron and St. Paul's play Foley in a Foley jamboree, when McCarron was a junior.. Foley's defense stymied both McCarron and RB Ivan Matchett. If I recall correctly, the only one of those St. Paul stars to make a big play that day was Destin Hood, the WR who signed with Bama but chose to play pro baseball. McCarron's passes looked rather soft and unexplosive for the most part, compared to what I had expected, judging from his publicity.
McCarron went on that year and led St. Paul's to the 5A state championship. He looked like a competent, steady, involved leader. THAT is what impressed me about A. J. McCarron. Historically, quarterbacks at Alabama who have been great leaders, like Trammell, Namath, and Stabler, had been championship winners in high school. McCarron had that aura about him his junior year at St. Paul's.
But then St. Paul's lost McCarron's supporting cast -- Matchett, Hood, and Mark Barron -- and the result was a dismal season his senior year. He still played in the all-star game in San Antonio, with D. J. Fluker. The latest I heard about McCarron was that he thought he wanted to check out Tennessee, and Saban told him he didn't think that was such a good idea.
I think that A. J. McCarron is going to make waves at Alabama. But the competition is so stiff that he is going to have to go all out if he is to be the Alabama quarterback.
just been reading our biggest rival message boards and it is clear that some stuff frome here is being spun over there. Look it up! Posted via Mobile Device

By biggest rival, I asume you mean the barn. They spin more yarn over there already than Rumpelstiltskin ever thought to, so on that front....no worries mate.
Don't sweat the barners minds.......they are what they are.
The only thing that is being spun on Auburn's boards are large webs of denial and lies.
Anyway, I wouldn't count out Star. He's only been here a year, I doubt he got much practice as a redshirt last Fall...might have been mostly a scout team player, I dunno...but with short practice time these days, the first string QB gets most of the snaps. This spring was honestly his first legitimate practice snaps. I wouldn't count him out, if all goes will with GMac he still has two more off-seasons to get it sorted out. For every Tebow and Stafford - who's ready in year one for top-level D-1 football - there are a plethora of solid commits at QB who take until their Junior year to get it together and see the field.
I wouldn't count him out to be starting in 2011, Saban loves Jr year players to come in when the former starter exits. He seems to be a firm believer that it takes 3 years to prepare a QB for college football.
If you've seen the tape on Phillip Sims, it becomes immediately evident that this guy has command of what goes on in a football game. he knows the game. he also knows enough to enrol a semester early, and if that holds up, he will, like John Parker Wilson, have that extra spring practice that puts an incoming quarterback way ahead of those who don't get that. Quarterbacks who progress expeditiously seem to understand the value of this sort of thing. I expect Phillip Sims to make a name for himself at quarterback.
My hopes would be for McElroy to solidify his starting job the next 2 years. Conversely, I've never been an advocate of rewarding anyone simply for their age.
He will be our quarterback this year, but if someone beats him out the next, then it is what it is. Survival of the fittest so to speak.
If we can't talk about our three QBs here then we mys well shut down our boards. Over look there spins most good recruits want to play with good teams!

Leaving something in its place I have traded for it. I want it to be a gain, not loss - good, not evil. Success, not failure in order that I Shall not forget the price I paid for it.

Don't get me wrong. I love all of our current players, but if someone else is better, then they should play.
I have read that your coaches told Phillip that Star could be switching positions.
I live in the Tidewater area of Virginia and have had the pleasure of watching Sims in action and he is the real deal. Plenty of arm strength and is very poised in the pocket. He should be a very good one for you guys.

That statement was taken completely out of context. The statement went something like you never can tell how close you are to being the starter. Someone could get hurt, someone could change positions.

Sigh.. I'm sure you meant no harm but come on. Do you seriously think Saban would have to schmooze some kid with this nonsense?
