Die hard usc fans can't afford hanging out on Hilton Head Isle, unless they're behind a counter and asking if you want fries with your order.
This thread reeks of homer. South Carolinians do take their football very seriously, in fact we take it so seriously that we packed out each game in the season Lou Holtz took us to a 0-11 record. Not a proud moment by any means, but it does show a dedication to the fans about our football.
We have a rivalry with Clemson that dates back over a hundred years and is still going strong. It might not be a SEC rivalry, but it's the most important game of the year for us. Now I'm not going to be as bold as to say it's up there with Alabama/Auburn, but kids are groomed from birth to either like wearing purple and orange or garnet and black.
As far as Hilton Head goes it's a tourist attraction and you're polling a very limited selection. I could very well go to anywhere in Alabama and get the same results.

I beg to differ. You could not go just any where in Alabama and get the same results. Now if I were to have asked the kind people in Hilton Head if they knew of say Jack Nickolson or chico Fernandez or some of the other golf greats they undoubtedly would have answered with an affirmative reply.

Your reply reeks of homer. Having lived in both states, it's clear that South Carolinians like football. However, football is generally not in South Carolinians' blood as it is with Alabamians. Posted via Mobile Device

I guess that is just something that we'll never agree on, on another note I'm looking forward to visiting Tuscaloosa for the game this year. On the way down there I'll make sure to stop at various gas stations and restaurants to test their knowledge of Alabama football.
Re: Do South Carolinians take their football serious?
I'm with Blake on this one. The coast of the Carolinas draws people from all across North America. A lot of those folks don't know anything about SEC football. (Many of them can break down the Stanley Cup final, however)
Get away from those areas, and South Carolina towns fill up their high school and college stadiums. And in my part of that world, throw in thousands of true believers from Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, Ohio State, Michigan, West Va., Penn St. and Notre Dame adding their fat mouths to the mix. Makes for some lively discussions year round.
Strangely enough, when things aren't going well, Clemson fans bear a striking resemblance to the boogs . . . they tend to disappear.
Re: Do South Carolinians take their football serious?
I'll throw in with Blake too. The SC and Clemson fans in this area (around Columbia) are very knowledgeable and take their football very seriously. I've been to many games at Williams-Brice, and yes, the tailgating is usually better than the football (these people can tailgate!), but the fans are quite rabid.
As observed from my many trips to the SC coast, you'd be better off asking about Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State football, or Yankees baseball.
Re: Do South Carolinians take their football serious?
I live in South Carolina and can assure you that they take their football seriously. One of the most rabid fanbases I know of whose team averages 6-8 wins a year (USC). Like a previous poster, I have been turned down tickets to Bama-USC games in Williams-Bryce by a family friend because we pulled for the other team. And as many here have said, sampling Hilton Head in the summer is like looking for football fans in Miami.

Re: Do South Carolinians take their football serious?
I think it safe to say the summer doldrums have officially hit, when folks are debating which state's citizens take their football more seriously - based, of course, on a highly scientific poll of 12 people walking around a well known tourist mecca, and asked the simple question of whether or not they know Steve Spurrier. I'll bet a lot of people in South Carolina never even knew who their governor was (heck, I'll best most people in Alabama don't know who the gov. is) ... until last week. The state literally was left without its elected leader, while he left the country.

He was searching for his "soul mate"

Mark Sanford on Bill Clinton
Quote:
This is "very damaging stuff," Sanford declared at one point, when details of Clinton's conduct became known. "I think it would be much better for the country and for him personally (to resign)... I come from the business side," he said. "If you had a chairman or president in the business world facing these allegations, he'd be gone."
Explaining his decision to back impeachment articles against Clinton, he added, "I think what he did in this matter was reprehensible... I feel very comfortable with my vote."

These people weren't walking around in a tourist mecca, they were employees in different stores and I just picked them at random. In 3 weeks I will go to Florida and I bet at least 50% of the people I ask if they know of a guy named urban meyer will reply with an affirmative. wanna bet? I'll put up my tickets to Bama-Ole Sis against your tickets to any team that plays Bama in 09.
