Do South Carolinians take their football seriously?

Share

I was in usce yesterday and asked 12 people if they knew a guy name of steve spurrier. One guy knew and one asked wasn't he the guy in Ga., I replied "no, he is the guy at South carolina, mark richt is the guy at georgia." no one else had a clue. Maybe Hilton Head Island is too much into golf and has no interest in football. My wife finally told me to quit picking on these poor people.

I guess it just depends on the grouping of people you are around. You might encounter the same thing among a group of NASA guys in Huntsville.

Re: Do South Carolinians take their football serious?

A huge slice of the NASA guys would be MSU grads, any way, HSV being the closest high tech center to Starkville (largest alum chapter outside MS). And they know who the Bama HC coach is and hate him, whoever he may be...

Die hard usc fans can't afford hanging out on Hilton Head Isle, unless they're behind a counter and asking if you want fries with your order.

Re: Do South Carolinians take their football serious?

Hilton Head is about as reflective of the rest of South Carolina as Dollywood is of Tenne . . .

Well, you get my point.

You'll find a lot of things at Hilton Head Island, just not many S.C. natives.
This state takes its high school and college football very seriously. In that regard, they are much more Deep South than its neighbor to the immediate north.

Re: Do South Carolinians take their football serious?

Having lived in SC in my earlier days, it use to be that they were then more of a basketball and baseball school and on occasion a decent football team. Unlike most of the SEC teams they only have one natural rivalry and that is Clemson which isn't in the SEC. Since joining the SEC they have developed somewhat of a rivalry with UGA due in part to its proximity to Columbia. Overall IMO their seriousness level for football is above UK, Vandy, and MSU but no where near the rest of the SEC teams. While I think SOS has pumped some life into that program it will never be more than a 7 to 8 win team.

That's some solid, enlightening, hard-hitting, society-changing research you did.

It would've been more exhaustive, but the grant money ran out.

Big A Re: Do South Carolinians take their football serious?

I am like an earlier poster in that Hilton Head is not a barometer of South Carolina.

I have a Gamecock fan that is so rabid he refuses to get me a ticket when Bama travels to Columbia (aiding and abetting the enemy).

I also know a rabid Clemson fan.

South Carolina has some similarities (instate rivalry) to Alabama; just not as rabid as Bama and Auburn fans.
