re: Tulsa World reporting Stoops in Tuscaloosa (merged threads)
I would believe that notes were exchanged on how to defend Florida's offense. Hopefully Coach Stoops gave Coach Saban some ideas that will help in the SEC Chapionship in December.

Forgive my ignorance, but does Stoops have ties with Saban that I don't know about? I thought he was a former Florida coordinator.

They've spoken warmly of each other in the past. There's no rule that coaches have to have served together to form a bond. Explain Coach Bryant and Darrell Royal...

I heard today that Bob Stoops flew to Tuscaloosa to talk Defensive schemes with coach Saban. Has anyone else heard this, or is it a rumor? Posted via Mobile Device
It would not surprise me. Saban is changing defensive schemes against the spread this off-season, and Stoops sees the spread every week. Before the SECCG, Saban and Muschamp discussed Florida. IMO, undefeated Florida will be shocked when they roll into the 2009 SECCG against Bama(No doubt Bama will be there).

You've got to be able to score 30+ to beat Florida and that's a tough task with their defense. I think it's a job well-done if you hold them somwhere in the mid-20s to low-30s. Some are kinda concerned that we're in for another Stallings v. Spurrier where we are consistently successful in the regular season but not get past Florida enough to win as many titles as we'd hoped for. Our undoing was always that we just couldn't stick with their offense scoring-wise even with good defense.
I think Saban's philosophy on offense is a little more open than Stallings'. Very similar but Saban seems to put more emphasis on effectiveness in the passing game and run-pass balance (being able to pass when we need to and when we want to). Last year, because of youth at receiver, a sometimes up-and-down QB, but a dominant tailback and OL combo...we really tended to only pass when it was convenient not when it was needed. The one time the whole season we needed pass - when Florida took the lead in the 4th - we had breakdowns in pass protection, WR routes, and QB reads. We weren't a strong straight pass block team anyway and the lack of spectacular QB play and that receiver youth finally caught up with us. I think we're going to develop some quality QBs, get quality experience at WR and OL, and that might just be the difference for us.
To me that's nowhere near as surprising as to learn that Stoops electronically responded to a reporter's question.

Exactly. Coach Bryant was also good friends with Bud Wilkinson, Duffy Daugherty and John McKay, among others.
