I figured I would post this here. It is Gentry Estes's article from today's press conference.
Fresh off a scorching practice field, Nick Saban updates Alabama's fall camp - The Bama Beat - al.com

Notice the quote by CNS about Star Jackson:

Quote:
How has Star Jackson progressed at quarterback?
"There's a lot of competition at the quarterback position. We've been very pleased with where Greg McElroy is. I don't think there's any question about the fact that the other three guys are all sort of in the developmental phase. We certainly like what we have seen from the young players. AJ (McCarron) has done a really good job and picked up things quickly. He has natural instincts for the position. He's accurate with the ball. There's a lot of competition there. Star has done a good job. He makes a lot of plays athletically. Regardless of what happens of at the quarterback position, he is a guy that we ought to have some kind of role for on this team this year."
Interesting stuff to say the least.

I was hoping that Dre would live up to his hype. But the pass rush is what is going to make us a special team this year if someone steps up. Don't know who it will be but hopefully someone. I've heard good things about Chris Bonds. I sure thought William Ming would be playing TE. No news on Terry Grant playing the slot? Seems there should be a way to get him the ball in space. Have not heard anything about Kevin Norwood which is surprizing.
Most of these guys will need a year in the weight room anyway.
Just got in from practice, Grant and some of the other RB's have been going into motion and moving into the slot, at least they did in walk thru's.

Overall, our 2 deep on defense is just amazing physically. I can't remember a time when we were this deep and talented on defense.
Up front , it's as close to 1992 as I can recall . Can't say the same @ DB though .

Would that mean we pass more than expected?

Not really we moved RB's into the slot a couple of times last year in obvious passing downs. I think it's just about the coaches getting the best 11 guys on the field at a time as well as getting as many play makers who can make explosive plays as well.

Are you saying that we aren't looking good at DB? Or just that we don't have much depth?

I think he's saying 92 DB's > 09 DB's.

Re: Fall Practice Summary

Several of you guys mentioned the team looked bigger. Well its not an illusion. Apparently nobody in the press keeps files on the players as obsessively as I do. I did my yearly roster review today and we saw some dramatic weight gains this summer, mainly on defense. Offensively a few of the OL guys put on some pounds but on the defensive front 7 positions 15, 20 and even higher weight gains were the norm. Anders for instance I felt could not hold the jack position but he's up to 235 now, still not quite big enough but certainly a lot closer to acceptable. Washington and Deaderick both playing at the same weight their first three years, both put on significant size, most of the linebackers put on some weight except for hightower who just moved weight from mostly muscle to all muscle. One of the few exceptions was Square who lost a fair amount of weight but he was probably too heavy coming in and of course Cody for the same reason.

Basically it took Saban 2 years to get the team in shape and this past off season he stacked a bunch of muscle on top of those in shape bodies. So get ready for a bigger, faster, stronger Alabama, we are going to overwhelm some of our opponents. but don't get over confident, we are playing for championships now and we are just now arriving where we need to be to tangle with the Florida's and the Oklahoma's of this world.

Not to burst your bubble but those numbers have been known to be...lets say inflated or deflated as the issue may be. I would take all of those numbers with a large grain of salt.

Oh darn, next you are going to say those 40 times are inflated too.

They may or may not have been taken with a hour glass.

Yes, to say the least...
My question is this: Where do those numbers come from? Lacy and Sentimore both had heights and weights listed on there, and they hadn't even reported yet.
Are these stats just given by the individual? Does some AD staff member report them as well as they can?
I think many are under the impression that the coaching staff stands next to a digital scale, each player is weighed naked, then measured with a laser.

But, anyway, the poster's point stands, and I think it is valid. We have some big dudes on our team.
