Any way you slice it, Auburn and Alabama are always going to be relatively equal even during one team's "darkest" decades. Alabama's bad years are still better than half of the SEC during their better ones. Both programs are top tier and have plenty of funds. I saw a stat last year that had Auburn making the most profit of any team in the SEC and Bama close behind. We may be a "cow town" , but our program makes a crap load of money and we put lots of players in the NFL. Just as Bama does. Bama was able to slow the bleeding of scholarship losses purely on strength of the program and reputation. Statistically your recruiting wasn't even far off from Auburn during your "dark" years. Alabama had the funds to bring in one of the better coaching staffs in the nation with Saban and crew and with it relatively instant success. Several other programs don't have options like this.

Auburn is in the same boat. We were able to double the salaries of almost every assistant coach we brought in to get them away from their current jobs. Expecting programs like ours to just drop off a huge amount is just unreasonable. There is simply too much support from the fans and university to let it happen.

There is no way to cut it: Auburn had a better decade than Alabama. The thing that you see when you dig deeper into the numbers is that Auburn was only modestly better than Alabama. When you look at Alabama's records against all the quality teams of the SEC, you'd see that the NCAA's sanctions did exactly what they set out to do: penalize Alabama by handicapping their competitiveness on the field. It is what it is and LSU, Georgia, Auburn, etc, etc aren't going to have asterisks next to their W for the Bama game.

I think that the golden age of Auburn football was only a game better per season than a probationary period Alabama squad shows just how relative successes are for programs. They were happy with winning 8 or 9 a year, having a 50/50 shot against LSU/UGA each season, and throughly dominating their chief rival in the win column. They had fewer ten win seasons and as many conference titles as their rival, Alabama, but Alabama was more up-and-down in this period and they won on the field against Alabama. They were happy with that...and not to say Alabama wasn't happy with beating LSU, UT, and Auburn in one season last year but there was a bit of disappointment that it didn't end in a conference and/or national title.
.... and that's the most glaring difference .

Over @ the barn , their universe revolves around Alabama football . Even during the 6 year run of losing to the barn , every sane Bama fan knew it was nothing more than a blip on the screen , so to speak . Sure , they will have a spike or two of success from time to time but , barn football will NEVER warrant a seat at the same table as the Tide
