This is a post from another board. Pretty interesting:
Auburn has talked so much how they have dominated Alabama over the past 10 years. So I decided to go to the record books and see exactly what all they have to show for it.
The past 10 years were without a doubt the darkest in Alabama history and probably one of the brightest if not the brightest in Auburn history.
So here's how things stack up for the two programs who love to hate each other from 1999-2008 (10 years).
Key Stats for Auburn
* 85-40 overall on-field record ( 2 losing seasons )
* 8.5 average overall wins per year
* 52 conference wins
* 7-3 record vs Bama
* 6 game winning streak vs. Bama from 2002-2007 (Note: Bama was on probation with limited scholarships from 2002-2006).
* 2 10+ win seasons
* 2 SEC West Championships
* 1 SEC Championship
* 1 BCS Bowl Game
Key Stats for Bama
* 75-51 overall on-field record ( 3 losing seasons )
* 7.5 average overall wins per year
* 46 conference wins
* 3-7 record vs. Auburn
* 4 10+ win seasons
* 2 SEC West Championships (2002 would've made 3 but we were ineligible)
* 1 SEC Championship
* 2 BCS Bowl Games
So now lets compare:
Auburn holds a 10 game edge in the overall record over a 10 year span. So statistically, Auburn has only been 1 game better than Bama over the past 10 years. Advantage for overall record = Equal
Auburn holds a 7-3 record over Bama during the 10 year span including a 6 game winning streak. .
Advantage for head-to-head record = Auburn
Auburn has 52 SEC victories to Bama's 46. The difference here is Iron Bowl. However, if you throw out the Iron Bowl games and look how each team fared against the rest of the SEC over the past 10 years, you will see that Auburn has 45 victories to Bama's 43.
Advantage for SEC record = Equal
Alabama has 4 10+ win seasons to Auburn's 2 over the past 10 years.
Advantage for 10+ win seasons = Alabama
Both teams have 2 SEC West Championships over the past 10 years.
Advantage for division = Equal
Both teams have 1 SEC Championship over the past 10 years.
Advantage for SEC Championships = Equal
Alabama has 2 BCS Bowl bids to Auburn's 1 over the past 10 years. However, Bama lost both of their games whereas Auburn won theirs.
Advantage for BCS Bowls = Equal
In summary, after looking at all the stats and comparing the 2 teams against each other and against the rest of the SEC and Nation; and after looking at the accomplishments of both teams over the past 10 years; we find that overall, both teams are equal. So during Bama's darkest decade and one of Auburn's brightest decades, they still can't dominate us on an overall SEC and National level regardless of what they say. Did they dominate us head-to-head? Yes. Did they dominate us overall? No.
I am trying to put it all behind me too. Especially considering that this was a large part of the time when I was a student and witnessed so much of the Dubose/Fran/Shula debacle first hand. It is a well known fact though that the Barn couldn't do that much even when we were down. Thankfully it is all part of the past, and the future looks so much brighter! RTR!!
I agree. It was a bad decade and it is behind us. But I think the point of the post is that even at our lowest, BarnU still couldn't take full advantage.
Is there really anything more important than head-to-head? I mean really, if we had gone 1 & 11 each year, but beaten them 10 straight times, you'd be saying something else.
Yes, they dominated us, but those days are over. Look ahead, my friend, the future is bright.
There is no way to cut it: Auburn had a better decade than Alabama. The thing that you see when you dig deeper into the numbers is that Auburn was only modestly better than Alabama. When you look at Alabama's records against all the quality teams of the SEC, you'd see that the NCAA's sanctions did exactly what they set out to do: penalize Alabama by handicapping their competitiveness on the field. It is what it is and LSU, Georgia, Auburn, etc, etc aren't going to have asterisks next to their W for the Bama game.
I think that the golden age of Auburn football was only a game better per season than a probationary period Alabama squad shows just how relative successes are for programs. They were happy with winning 8 or 9 a year, having a 50/50 shot against LSU/UGA each season, and throughly dominating their chief rival in the win column. They had fewer ten win seasons and as many conference titles as their rival, Alabama, but Alabama was more up-and-down in this period and they won on the field against Alabama. They were happy with that...and not to say Alabama wasn't happy with beating LSU, UT, and Auburn in one season last year but there was a bit of disappointment that it didn't end in a conference and/or national title.

I understand all that, Auburn was more consistent during that time frame but when you look at the decade as a whole, the accomplishments are equal as far as the SEC and BCS goes.

Interesting, but it gave me a headache

No, advantage Auburn.

Big time advantage to Auburn. This counts more than anything else in this comparison.

You can't throw out the Iron Bowl. We sure as heck wouldn't. Advantage Auburn.
I've heard this before and I find the "fuzzy math" interesting. But I simply don't agree. If the Aubies were posing this argument we'd laugh at them.
I'd rather just suck it up and say, "Get ready, because payback is hell."
I just can't hide behind all those stats... The 3-7 record against Auburn is just too much for me to overcome! Nevertheless, my money is on Saban to better that record during his tenure here.
I also remember Auburn beating us, Fl, Tenn, LSU and UGA during that time where we lost to those teams every year along with UCLA & Oklahoma. Auburn was the better team and I give them all the credit in the world. But we are back now and the future is ours!
