The thing that would disturb me most if I were a UT fan watching that game was a lack of effort in the clutch parts of the game.
It's one thing to get excited and have a mass jumping up and down session on the sidelines ... but right after that I noticed a couple key plays where defenders got blocked and just lay on the ground watching. And in one case the play came back to the backside where the guy was lying on the ground and was a big first down for AU. The other was on the kickoff return right after the sideline hype session.
Anyone else notice this?
Another thing was the dissension among the offensive linemen and the OL coach mentioned by the sideline reporter. (Or was it the receivers group ... I can't remember now.)
And finally, Kiffin seemed detached at times from what was going on. Don't want to read too much into that, because it may have been because he was having to focus on play calling for the offense.
The jury is certainly still out on Kiffin ... but I think if I were a UT fan I would have noted some warning signs Sat night.

Re: Laugh generator straight from a UT fan board...
The problem with Vol Nation is that too many of them are still living in the past, they have no concept of what state our program is in. Our fans simply won't accept the fact that we're in a major rebuilding stage and that Crompton is the best option we have at QB. I don't like it anymore than other fans, but truth is truth, we're going to struggle for a little bit and it's going to take a couple 2-3 years to get back to competing with you guys and Florida.
As far as future QB's, we have a commit in Tyler Bray that a lot of us are excited about and there's a lot of chatter going around about Matt Sims, I guess the coaches are going to take a look at him.

Agree with you ScoobyVol. I am just guessing that the timing of your recovery depends upon just how soon Bray, Sims or whoever you get develops into a decent QB. Lord knows whoever the QB proves to be, he will have great receivers and backs to work with.
As in several recent years, the Vol Nation's expectations were probably unreasonably high at the start of the season. They were fed this year by the huge win over WKY. Those of you who are patient will undoubtedly be rewarded. Nothing personal, but I didn't like just saying that.

There is a lot of dissent on the UT boards with a few getting restless with Kiffin, so already the doubt in his abilities is showing with their fanbase.
And I'd have to agree with those that do.
Ultimately the blame for UTees problems lies with the HC. Kiffin looked exactly like what he is, inexperienced and over his head during the UT/Barn game. BAMA fans should recognize the looks on the sideline. We've been there. Utee is going to have quite a few more of these type games with the on-the-job training for their HC. They can blame it all on the qb/Crompton issue, poor wr's, or a lack of overall talent, but you'll never convince me they have less talent than AU does. They just got out-coached and out-played and wasn't prepared for the game. AU was.
My wife, who is near 80, and I have different perspectives on Kiffin. I tell her Kiffen looks pretty much as you said with a little arrogance thrown in. She just tells me he is a hunk.

Well, he is easy on the eyes. So was Mike Shula.

Having seen Kiffin be the QB coach/OC at USC, I've always felt that it's easy to look great as a coach when you have the Matt Leinarts, Reggie Bushes, LenDale Whites, Dwayne Jarretts, etc. on offense - heck, even Shula could've looked great with those players. It's also a lot easier when you have Carroll as your finisher for the recruits, and you're recruiting base in one of the most talented football states in the country.
Take him completely out of that, and what is he? He didn't do well at Oakland, which I will partially concede that Al Davis is part of the problem there (did anyone see them get blasted by the Texans yesterday?), and when he came to UT, he got a bunch of recruiters to come along with him. Orgeron, for all his yaw-yaw football crap, is a great D-line coach and a great recruiter.
UT looked completely gassed by the end of the first half on Saturday night. I'm wondering if Kiffin will even make it past year two. Kinda reminds me of Weis and ND situation...

Re: Laugh generator straight from a UT fan board...
The big problem with UT's last recruiting class was the fact that they did not fullfill their needs at all. If you listen to UT fans they are excited it was ranked so high, but they did not get a QB or any quality O linemen. This is going to hurt them pretty bad for a couple of years at least. Also from what I am hearing is they allready lost a commit due to their performance.
Re: Laugh generator straight from a UT fan board...
A little off-topic here, but I didn't want to start a thread just about UT. But I wonder what other posters and our UT faithful that post here think about UT's prospects for the year. Most were saying that a winning season would be an improvement over last year. Now sitting at 2-3, they will need to win 4 out of the remaining 7 to have a shot at a bowl game. UT's upcoming schedule is as follows:
10/10 Georgia
10/17 Bye
10/24 at Alabama
10/31 South Carolina
11/7 Memphis
11/14 at Ole Miss
11/21 Vanderbilt
11/28 at Kentucky
With the possible exceptions of Memphis and Vandy, I don't see any gimmees on there. In a normal year, UT should win against Memphis, Vandy and Kentucky. That means that they have to win one of Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina or Ole Miss to finish 6-6 and try for a bowl bid.
With rumours of infighting among players, especially the offense, this team could be poised for a tailspin. A serious blowout or a loss to an unexpected team could provoke that. Of course the expected wins are all in November. So what do you think, will Kiffin have a losing season his first year?

I've been told privately that the practices are disorganized, even Dubosian (staff gets to post this kind of material - ), and I'm not terribly surprised. I think he's going to turn out to be an interim stepping stone coach, much as CMS was...
