I don't usually visit opponents' boards, but I did go to a UT site today and caught this nugget in a thread about whether the new coaching staff should get a year or two as a "free pass" or whether they should be expected to coach up the current players (especially Crompton) and win now:

You can attempt to "coach up" Crapton until Chicago gets the summer Olympics and it will be an exercise in total futility and a maddening experience that might drive some to the railing of the Gay Street Bridge. He is dumber than a box of rocks and makes everyone around him often look like baffoons.

Add to that unfortunate looks. He just doesn't look like the sharpest knife. Getting rid of the toothbrush on his upper lip might help...

Including his coaches... my question is do they not have a decent backup they can try. I haven't watched them play much this year.
I was wondering the samething.... But got to thinking leave him in there and let our defense have a field day with him...

I think that one of our UT members said that the backup was worse. Their search for a decent QB signee this past season seemed almost desperate. I think I see why now. And it appears neither Sims is in their future...

Nick Stevens is their backup. The commentators said that according to TN coaches, if they played Stevens, then the UT fans would be screaming to 'play Crompton'. Assuming this is true, it tells me that the coaching staff at UT will badmouth their players. Very telling.

One conspiracy theory postulates that Kiffin expected his first year to go poorly ever since spring training opened, and that he has left Crompton under center to serve as a convenient scapegoat for the Vol's poor showing in Year 1. The improvements from having a new QB next year combined with the team practicing a second year under this new system may rescue his image more than switching to the backup now and showing only modest improvements from this year to next.
Not that I think this is his rationale, of course. Just sayin'.
Re: Laugh generator straight from a UT fan board...
In Crompton's defense (I'm not sure why I'm defending him ) his receivers dropped a LOT of passes last night that hit them right in the hands. Of course, it may be that they were just not used to the ball being on target.
I don't think the coaches were bad mouthing the backup, just making a general observation that the back up QB is usually the most popular player on the team.
It appears to me that Kiffin spent too much time giving the press sound bites and not enough time actually coaching his players. This may be great for recruiting, but the only championship he will win is for wasting the most talent.

There were some drops, but there were also a LOT of passes that were catch-able, but were enough off target that it would take an exceptional effort by the receiver. IMO, those far outnumbered the miscues by the receivers.

I think it's fairly obvious that this is what Kiffin is doing. Stephens may not be much better, but you at LEAST give the backup a chance to see what he can do when you're starter is clearly losing games and does not have the backing of the rest of the team. I believe Kiffin is attempting to use Crompton this year at QB so he can try to convince some hot shot QB recruit that he will get immediate playing time. Stephens is only Junior, so my theory is that he doesn't want to "risk" Stephens playing well enough that a QB recruit may not see immediate playing time. Clay Travis also made some very good points in his blog and made reference to Kiffin using Crompton as a scapegoat. Whatever they do, I just hope they keep Crompton as the starter through Alabama week...
