I am surprised to learn that as well. I thought sure Shula made the comment that "he was minding his own business being an NFL assistant when his alma mater called."
As I mentioned to dayhiker, that was a typo on my part. Now it may be true, mind you, that Shula reached out to us, but I don't know one way or the other, and I imagine it was actually 'Bama reaching out to him. Again, though, I don't know definatively one way or the other.
Either way, regardless of who reached out to whom, it's a no-brainer decision... QB coaching job with a mediocre NFL team, or a head coaching job at a traditional powerhouse college program. Alma mater or no, it shouldn't take any rational human being long to figure that one out.
Re: Where would we be if CMP hadn't gone to the strip club?
I'll tell ya where we would be, there would be a brass pole in the athletic office and one in the locker room...... Lots of entertainment but no wins......

Alabama is 2- and 3-deep all over the place with full grown, meaner-than-he!! men. It's almost not fair making college kids play against them. Any Saban-coached team is going to be deep as he!! with recruits that have elite size, strength and experience at their position and they are going to play with incredible physicality.
I support PAWS.

I believe he didn't want to interview, but just get the job.
Either way, hindsight being 20/20, it was a mistake. I doesn't register in my world, as I don't look back much, but I hear this one a lot from Bama fans. "If only"...

The bigger question is where we'd be if we'd taken up Bill Parcells on his offer to come coach Alabama.
That's the first I've heard of this. I can't imagine the Big Tuna on a college sideline. He would have probably done like Perkins, stayed 3 or 4 years and then moved on.

I can't recall if this came up after fRan or after Price. The thing I recall reading was the fear of the NCAA on this one since Parcells likely knows jack about recruiting rules.

You are obviously not a Pat Dye disciple. Otherwise you would know that hindsight is indeed, "50/50".
I agree though, not hiring Bowden was a mistake. Of course I'm not sure Spurrier's "Free Shoes University" would have been as funny had Bowden been at Bama, but I'm sure the whine-filled ole ball coach would have figured something out.
Re: Where would we be if CMP hadn't gone to the strip club?
Personally, I think Price could have made an interesting hire. I don't know if he'd ever lead us to an SEC title...but he would have really changed the offensive dynamic of SEC football that Urban Meyer is doing right now. He taught a passing spread and I'm sure that he would have likely picked up on components of the spread option to keep SEC D's honest.
The big problem is that as mediocre Shula was as a finisher in recruiting, Price was likely going to be worse. He could have had a few good years with Croyle only to fizzle out after Brodie graduated. Overall, I think he would have been a winner in Tuscaloosa but maybe not a champion. His record at UTEP ain't great but when you consider where they were at before him, he's worked a miracle in El Paso. Plus, Washington State has absolutely fallen apart following his departure...they did make a Rose Bowl in 2002!
Re: Where would we be if CMP hadn't gone to the strip club?
Or if Coach Bryant had left for the Miami Dolphins......
