After watching dozens upon dozens of football games this year I have come to the conclusion that I don't really want any type of Color Analyst for the football games I watch on TV.
I think most college football fans are smart enough to know what is going on and what the circumstances are, why do I need someone to tell me what this team or that team did wrong and what they should be trying to do. Give me someone whom can accurately express in as few words as possible what took place on the play. I can handle the rest. These networks are getting so caught up in wanting their announcers to be apart of the game.. Sorry but there seems to be no more Keith Jacksons or Howard Cosells left. Yes, there are a few that do a fair job, but do we really need them? I say no. That's what the TV is for, this is not radio where you need to paint a mental picture for the listener.
For goodness sake, Vern Toungtwist has called more Bama games over the last year two years than any 3 other crews put together and he still is clueless to what our players names are. Not to mention he can't even remember what our school name is. I would say if you gave a crap about the game you were calling you might want to make sure with the coaching staff or teams radio crew how to actually pronounce the names of a teams best players!!
It's a shame we can't just turn on the TV and watch the game and enjoy it without having to scream at the announcers every other play because they screw a players name up or call out the wrong teams name or in Vern's case call a completed catch that was then advanced 30 yards and fumbled at the goal line an incomplete pass. This guy is clueless.. Danielson is not my favorite by any means but at least he understands the game, not sure why he keeps working with ole Toungtwist.
What does everyone else want or expect from TV announcers?? I say take them out of the both and put em in with the instant replay official, maybe between the two of them they could get at least 75% of the bad calls corrected...

Someone who quits jinxing the tide, such as bragging that ingram hasn't fumbled the ball in 322 rush attempts and suddenly he does. I do believe in the jinx!!

One thing I'd like is for them to stay focused on the game. Lets keep the camera on the ref when there's a flag, and keep it on him until he announces the infraction. I can't tell you how many times I'm screaming, "WHAT'S THE FLAG?!" while were staring at the announcers in the booth talking about something unrealted. I don't want to SEE them, unless it's the beginning of the half, welcoming the audience to the game. Also, show a replay so we can SEE if the penalty was called correctly.
In a related note, let's not miss snaps looking at plays from other games. That's what halftime is for.
ps. I know some of these are more director decisions, and not really the fault of Gary & Vern.
Note to announcers, give me a game experience. Tell me who made the run who made the tackle, where the ball is, what down it is. During timeouts fill in with some color stuff such as did you know Alabama has never had a heisman winner. Before the game learn how to pronounce players names, have a cheat sheet if needed with it pronounced phonetically for you. If you need help there should be a guy off screen with a computer that can give you a hand.
I just mainly want them to give me pertinent info on the game, I don't need to know what a player's parents did for a living, what sports his sister played, what his hobbies are, etc. One of my all-time favorites was Ray Scott, ex voice of the Packers back in the Vince Lombardi era. He was very economical with his words, but he kept you updated with what was happening in the game. He'd describe a play something like this - "It's 1st and 10 for the Packers on their own 36, 8:17 left in the 2nd quarter. Starr takes the snap, rolls left and hands off to Hornung, Hornung finds a seam and plows ahead to the 43, gain of 7, 2nd and 3." And that was about it, between plays he might fill you in about the weather, field condition, attendance, etc, but that was about it. He had a way of holding your attention though, I think it was because he wasn't a motor mouth and the listener hung onto his every word because he sensed it was important.
I don't think we'll see any more like him though, a lot of today's fans want to be entertained as much as to watch the game.

I want Ron Franklin, Mike Gottfried, or Keith Jackson back. Or even Craig James at this point.

"You boys were eight and ten years old last time Alabama was on top. That was before any of you were paying much attention to it. What are you doing here? Tell me why you are here. If you are not here to win a national championship, you're in the wrong place. You boys are special. I don't want my players to be like other students. I want special people. You can learn a lot on the football field that isn't taught in the home, the church, or the classroom. There are going to be days when you think you've got no more to give and then you're going to give plenty more. You are going to have pride and class. You are going to be very special. You are going to win the national championship for Alabama." -- Coach Paul 'Bear' Bryant in his first meeting with his first team at Alabama, 1958.
