The downturn in stadium turnout is probably due to the economy...
Agree completely with the economy thing. People are forced to prioritize, and for many fan bases football is not near the top of the list; the great exceptions are the majority of SEC teams and other national powers (USC, Ohio State, Michigan, ND, Texas, Oklahoma, etc.). Of these teams mentioned, most have the feeling of being "knocked out" of the national championship picture early. Everybody has heard from the media about the perceived separation between Bama, Florida, & Texas and the rest of the country. Even though Bama has a BIG challenge against LSU, most experts are rushing to pencil in the Bama vs. Florida winner plays Texas for all the marbles. Even the pre-season Heisman candidates have either been injured or underperformed and there is a lack of the big, nationally recognized superstar.
But hey, Bama is undefeated, controls their destiny, and is in position to achieve many great things... It couldn't possibly be more exciting for us Bama fans. Now if the offense could just work those red-zone issues out.
I think the reason that you feel like some games are less hyped this year is because of how crazy last year was. After coming off a 7-6 season, no one expected Alabama to shoot to the top with a 12-0 regular season which caused a lot of talk on sports shows. Now that Alabama looks like they might be doing it again this year, the excitement is worn off a bit...almost like this season is just a continuation of last season and nothing new has happened.

That's an execellent point. On top of that, no other team in the nation has been this year's "2008 Bama" so to speak. Nobody is having that great, unexpected season like we had last year. But, that's okay. We're having one here in 2009!

The 2009 season has been nothing but filler material leading up to the Dec. 5th SEC title game between us and Florida.
Well, that is one possibility. Bama hasn't clinched it yet, though.

Even other fan bases just don't seem to care that much. As a Bama fan, it's great, but it sux to see the rest of college football in such a lull. Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge has been a very quiet place this year, even when Florida came to town.
You are dreaming, amigo.

This season, the entire scope of college football has been Alabama, Florida, then the rest of the country. Are Bama and Florida just that much better than the entire rest of the nation? Is 2009 a 2 team race? Something just seems off about the sport this year.
I think your perception about the world outside Tuscaloosa is a bit flawed, sir.

This year, I hardly heard a word about Florida at LSU (and both teams were undefeated)
It was the biggest game of the season to date and hyped to the nth degree! The last three national champions at night on CBS in prime time in Tiger Stadium. Were you paying attention at all?

What is happening? Or, am I just going crazy!?
I think you have been paying attention to one team, my friend. The rest of college football hasn't gone anywhere.
I don't think you can ever say Tiger Stadium is "quiet", especially during the Florida game.
You can't be serious. I have plenty of UGA fans and they definitely MORE than care about this weekend. I think UF fans have a high interest as well.
I don't want this to sound bad, but have you been under a rock? The Florida/LSU game was especially hyped. That's all you heard about that week.
Not sure how you've missed some of this.
Maybe it's just me. I just can't help but feel like this season is kind of lack luster compared to years past. Bama notwithstanding, of course. Someone who had gone to the Oklahoma-Texas game told me people were actually walking out early. Then again, he could have been pulling my leg.

It's just you. . Regarding OU/Texas, the only empty seats towards the end were apparently your friends. The game was decided with a little more than a minute left so if that's when people started leaving, that's normal. Posted via Mobile Device
My perception is there are FEWER hyped or "BIG GAMES" than in the past. My theory on why this is happening is there are just not as many teams in the battle for the #1 spot. There were several KEY players who left early for the draft who would have made a bigger impact on this season. UGA, it appears, is completely lost without Stafford. I know there are more, but can't think of them all. Didn't Crabtree & Sanchez leave early too? They were key players for different teams who could have been fighting at the top too. Also, IMO the injury to Bradford put Ok out of the race.
Oh and I live in GA and all my Dawg friends have pretty much given up on their season. They're even at the point of thinking beating Tech will be a miracle.....
