What has happened to college football?

Share

The 2009 season has been nothing but filler material leading up to the Dec. 5th SEC title game between us and Florida. Even other fan bases just don't seem to care that much. As a Bama fan, it's great, but it sux to see the rest of college football in such a lull. Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge has been a very quiet place this year, even when Florida came to town. Florida and Georgia are playing this weekend, usually a very highly anticipated rivalry game, and fans of both teams could care less. This season, the entire scope of college football has been Alabama, Florida, then the rest of the country. Are Bama and Florida just that much better than the entire rest of the nation? Is 2009 a 2 team race? Something just seems off about the sport this year.

Remember last year when it was the week of Alabama at Georgia? The hype for that game was off the charts. Same for Alabama at LSU. This year, I hardly heard a word about Florida at LSU (and both teams were undefeated), Tennessee at Alabama, and have heard nothing about Florida vs. Georgia. The only games that I can truly say were hyped up were Alabama vs. Virginia Tech and Tennessee at Florida. And the only reason the Tennessee/Florida game got as much hype as it did was because of the Kiffin/Meyer thing going on. Other than that, there has been little or no hype about games that are usually highly anticipated. Same is true for other rivalries like Oklahoma/Texas. I talked to someone who went to the game in Dallas, and has been 4 or 5 other times over the years, and they said that that stadium was very quiet compared to previous years. It seemed as if once again, nobody really cared. Even the sports bars aren't packed this season like in seasons past. Those places are also very quiet this year. What is happening? Or, am I just going crazy!?

Re: What has happened to college football?

Wait until next week. I guarantee the Bama/LSU game will be hyped to the max. Their only loss is to the #1 team in the nation...and we are looking to get back at them for stealing the games in 2005 and 2007 in our stadium. I agree that some other games don't seem to have the allure they used to, but a lot of it is because we are doing so well. It's hard to see everything clearly below you when you are at the top of the mountain.

I can't wait to beat LSU in T town. It's been quite awhile, 1999 I think. We had them beat in 2005 and 2007 and let it get away.

Re: What has happened to college football?

The downturn in stadium turnout is probably due to the economy, however I agree the mood doesn't seem the same this year.

Re: What has happened to college football?

I have even read where fans have left the stadiums, early even when there were close games! That is amazing!

LSU Florida set a record so that game was hyped.

Re: What has happened to college football?

Could be several factors. A lot of teams are down this year, including Oklahoma and USC. Even though Texas is undefeated, they seem to be lacking something. Then you have the economy and the Swine Flu.

I don't think you can ever say Tiger Stadium is "quiet", especially during the Florida game.

You can't be serious. I have plenty of UGA fans and they definitely MORE than care about this weekend. I think UF fans have a high interest as well.

I don't want this to sound bad, but have you been under a rock? The Florida/LSU game was especially hyped. That's all you heard about that week.

Not sure how you've missed some of this.

Re: What has happened to college football?

Bama/LSU game will be hyped up, should be a great game. That being said, I am really glad we have a bye week. We should be even more focused and prepared to beat the Tigers.

I agree Sooner. During the LSU Georgia game, CBS was advertising it like crazy. My brother and I commented on how CBS was going to hype it up so much.

Re: What has happened to college football?

I think the Bama/LSU will be hyped as the winner of it should play in the SECCG.

Politics, Economy, Health Care, Swine Flu - who's got time to worry about a little football game?
