I never really cared for ol' Stewart Mandel, but at least he's rational enough to understand that the whole stink being raised by Kiffin was completely moronic.

I know you hate people whining about bad calls, but if Terrence Cody doesn't get flagged for excessive celebration at the end of the 'Bama-Vols game, shouldn't the SEC retroactively award UGA the game I won against LSU? I mean, fair is fair.

Hey A.J. Thanks for writing in. Glad to see you're a Mailbag reader. Naming you to our Midseason All-America Team last week didn't happen to prompt this e-mail, did it?
I regret to inform you, however, that the difference between your admittedly unwarranted flag and the non-call on Cody for removing his helmet is that there was no time left on the clock after the end of the play, therefore there was no "next play" onto which to tack a penalty. I can understand your confusion, however. Lane Kiffin didn't seem to know or care about this technicality during his now-standard postgame gripe-fest. Maybe you read his comments. Some advice: don't. Quite frankly, I'm not sure at this point whether he knows any football rules.
I wonder if AJ Green really sent in an email, or if it was just some crazy UGA fan posing as him? Hmmm...

Honestly, that's probably an instance of Mandel writing as A.J. Green to make a point about Lane Kiffin. It's a standard practice - Jim Rome and Pardon the Interruption do it all the time.
I would think that it's an obnoxious UGAG fan. Its not like they are known for there football knowledge.

Yeah, if someone had told me a few days ago that the one national sports media personality who WOULDN'T be towing the line for Lame was going to be Mandel, I wouldn't have believed it. Nice to be proven wrong in this case, though.

Actually, Mandel is wrong here. If the penalty was a non-dead ball foul (like running into the kicker or something), then UT would have had an additional play even though the clock reached zero. The game isn't allowed to end on a "redo" type penalty. The thing is it was a dead ball foul as was already discussed in many threads on here already.

"The foul for taking helmet off is a live ball foul treated as a dead-ball foul," Bloom wrote in an e-mail Saturday night. "That is, if it happens on a play where time does not expire then the penalty is enforced on the following play. However since the clock ran out on that play, then there is no next play, so there is no penalty to mark off."
