Twenty Years Ago, One Hit Changed Two Lives Forever

Brad Gaines will do it again early Wednesday morning. He'll grab some Clorox and glass cleaner, toss them in the trunk of his Buick and head to a little cemetery 175 miles away.

His long, strange trip actually began 20 years ago today.

"I'll be doing it until I die," Gaines said.

Here's an ESPN video about it that was aired in 2005.

Great story. I was just a kid when this happened, but being from Chucky's hometown, I can remember very clearly how it affected everyone in town. This is one of my more vivid memories from that age.

Re: Twenty Years Ago, One Hit Changed Two Lives Forever

I remember when this happened but its still kind of fuzzy to me. I was only 11 so bear with me. When the guy went up to catch the ball didn't he fall on Mullin's helmet and break his neck, or did the sheer force of impact from Mullins into the receiver break his neck?

I seem to remember that the guy came down onto Mullins by accident.

Either way, it truly was a tragedy and I hope that Mullins rests in peace. The receiver (I forgot his name) should also let go of some of that guilt because its not healthy. It was obviously an accident.

I remember watching the game and Chucky hitting him with his head down and that's what caused the break. If I'm wrong here, please correct me.

So it wasn't surprising that he lowered his helmet and buried it in No. 44's back. Gaines had gone up to catch a pass. The force from behind knocked the ball loose before he hit the ground.

Re: Twenty Years Ago, One Hit Changed Two Lives Forever

Thanks for posting.

Remember it happening vividly on the field, but was not aware at all of the continuing story of Gaines making the annual trek to CM's grave. If you don't get choked up reading this story, there's something wrong with you.
