Considering Alabama is 8-0 with 3 new players on the offensive line, and a QB making his first run through the SEC if Alabama wins out Saban deserves it IMO.
I appreciate your enthusiasm for Kiffin and understand why TN fans feel he oughta' be in the running for Coach of the Year. However, I agree with those who point out he inherited a lot of talent at TN. Certainly more than Chizik or Mullen stepped into. Or that Brooks can garner. The talent at TN is obviously rising to the surface now.
I give Kiffin credit for:
- getting the Vol faithful on board;
- signing a very good staff;
- recruiting well; and
- avoiding off-field player issues.
Trouble is, Kiffin isn't the only SEC coach that can lay claim to those qualities (for their respective teams). Furthermore, Kiffin has some baggage in the form of embarrassing the SEC office and not knowing when to keep his mouth shut.
Bottom line: I agree with the earlier post that if TN wins out, Kiffin may be the writers' choice for COTY. Heck, from their perspective, anything that creates controversy and rancor is fodder for their pens and helps them put food on the table. Naming Kiffin COTY would accomplish that.
I read Jess Nicholas's article with great interest with respect to what coaches are doing the best job. I understand that Lane is the enemy and not the favorite of opposing fans, but if he wins out, how can he not be the SEC coach of the year? If the criteria is to give the coach of the year honor to whoever wins the league, then it's settled and not up for debate. However, if it is rewarded to the coach that made the most positive impact, Lane has to be considered, if he wins out and leads Tennessee to a decent bowl. This is a team that finished 5-7 last season and lost to Wyoming. They are currently playing like a Top 15 club and could easily be 6-2 or 7-1.
In addition, I would like to take exception with Jess's opinion that the Vols will be worse next season. Monte has stated that he has not put the entire defense in and we should be better in year two of being in a new offensive and defensive system. We knew there would be growing pains in year one. Also consider that Tennessee is starting two walkons on the o-line and a rs freshman right tackle that is a converted tight end.
Herbstreet,Collin Cowherd,Jim Rome and other national pundits are jumping on the Big Orange bangwagon as Vol stock continues to rise. Even Paul Finebaum is becoming impressed and he has been Lane's biggest critic.
I predict Lane will win a national title in the next five years and goes back to the NFL, but in the meantime there will be good times in Knoxville. Thank you.
I have read this three times and for the life of me cannot understand why you would come to a Bama message board and post this crap.
Glad I didn't have a drink in my hand....I would have spewed all over the computer from laughter when I read this statement.
Was not trying to be deragatory, but simply noting that Tennessee traditionally starts the season with its tough chunk of the schedule and finishes with its easy chunk. Memphis, Ole Miss, Vandy, and Kentucky are the remaining foes. Tennessee will be favored (highly favored in 3 of those games) in all 4 and should finish the season 8-4, no? Posted via Mobile Device
No. Coach Chizik should get the award for new coaches. He has beat UT and MSU and has the better record at 6-3 vs 4-4 Kiffin. Coach Chizik has done more with less.

Just what we needed another lame thread for Lame the coach. Even if he had a better record there is more to being a good coach than that. In his position he is a leader of young men. He is supposed to set an example for them to follow. It is my opinion he has failed miserably. He has not represented his school nor state in a dignified manner.
Another misguided Vol fan who believes everything kiffykat says. Let me guess you also predict the sec office will give UT another kick at the end of the season since cody took his helmet off.
If we're going to give the award based on progress,effort, and moral victories, then yes I would be inclined to agree. But if it's going to be given based on results, then I dont see how any HC in the league should get it over an undefeated Saban and/or Urban Meyer. Being able to navigate an SEC schedule without a regular season loss in this day and time is nothing short of remarkable, and everything else pales in comparison, IMO...

Does that arnge kool-aid come premixed, or do you stir in a little Old #7 before drinking it?

Spot on... and with both teams being "marked men" so to speak. Either of the two would be appropriate, especially Meyer because of the pre-season hype.
