Lane, I don't mean no disrespect or nothing, cause you got streed cred and all that, but Gene Chizik beat you straight up with a lot less talent. Plus, you don't know how to keep your yap shut. Luckily, I've never had that problem.

However, if it is rewarded to the coach that made the most positive impact, Lane has to be considered, if he wins out and leads Tennessee to a decent bowl.
Considering he's one sentence away from being suspended, it's kinda hard to think of Lane in a "positive" light if you're not a UT fan. He's called out coaches and schools; refs and the conference; and shown that he doesn't have a good grasp of the rules.
Currently, he only has a .500 record, lost an out-of-conference game at home and came waaaay too close in a squeaker against Ohio. He blamed his poor clock management the end of the Bama game on fear of magical flags and a conference conspiracy.
Sorry, I don't see how anyone could consider him for Coach of the Year at this point.
Quote:
They are currently playing like a Top 15 club and could easily be 6-2 or 7-1.
Three points: 1) You're not. 2) You're not. 3) You could easily have lost to OHIO and be 3-5 right now.
SEC coach of the year...I think there are typically two mindsets. One is the coach of which team has the best performance start to finish. The other is the coach that gets the most from him his team that had the least expectations.
As of right now, lets eliminate these:
Houston Nutt
Bobby Johnson
Mark Richt
Steve Spurrior
Of the teams with that people expected to do well, you have:
Urban Meyer
Nick Saban
Les Miles
Of those with little to no expectations:
Dan Mullen-Team is playing better, but ultimately not winning. He is not a likely candidate unless he pulls some rabbits and finishes strong.
Rich Brooks:Also needing to have a strong finish to be a candidate.
Bobby Petrino: Same boat.
Cheezit: Should beat Furman. Can be a strong candidate if he beats UGA and gets his team to 8 wins.
Kiffin: I am not sure if his 8-4 is better than cheezits 8-4.
So I say its between Saban/Meyer/Miles/Kiffin/Cheezit, depending on how the remaining schedule plays out. Plenty of football left to be played.
Come to think of it, my post is pretty pointless.

Chiznik and Kiffin have won a couple of nice games that possibly could be called upsets but they've also lost a couple that they should have easily won had their teams been properly coached.
Mullen, at least has won every single game that State was supposed to win and has taken LSU to the wire, scared Florida to death and even played Ga. Tech a pretty tough game.
So as it stands now, if I had to vote for one of the three it would be him.
But since I don't have to vote for one of those three I'd vote for Saban, or Miles dependant on how the season turns out. Remember, Saban was picked by many to finish second in the West behind Ole Miss, and Miles was picked to finish third. So if either of those two play for the SEC title I consider that to be a better coaching job than some bird who got his team to play to their potential in about half their games.
By tradition, the winners have fallen into one of two categories. One is guys who've done the most with the least. The other is the guys who've accomplished herculean tasks with their teams, even though the teams are talented. Kiffin doesn't fall into either of those categories...

Although he has recruited well so far and seems to have his players excited, I think that the job of head football coach has so much more to it than that. I think setting a positive example for young men is a pretty important part of the job, and I don't think he's done this yet.
Whether or not UT wins out, I'd be very surprised if CLK wins any coach of the year awards. The establishment isn't going to reward someone who has been shooting off at the mouth and acting like a child since he was hired.
Was not trying to be deragatory, but simply noting that Tennessee traditionally starts the season with its tough chunk of the schedule and finishes with its easy chunk. Memphis, Ole Miss, Vandy, and Kentucky are the remaining foes. Tennessee will be favored (highly favored in 3 of those games) in all 4 and should finish the season 8-4, no? Posted via Mobile Device
I misread your statement. I thought you was saying Tennessee had the easiest schedule in the nation. I got you now, typically in November the UT is pretty easy. Usually have one non-conference, Vandy, and Kentucky. The fourth game of the month can be tough.
There was a great article on BOL about recruiting talent that showed where the most 4 and 5 star players went over the last 5 years. UT was in the top 10...and still only a .500 team; FSU is in the same boat. If you look at the talent at UT, it's hard to say CLK deserves COTY unless you REALLY drink the orange kool-aid.
I can't imagine someone who's charge is not only to win games, but also to shape and mold the men who play for him, winning an award when he's required a talking to from the commissioner due to his inability to control his own tongue...

I remember Colin Cowherd talking about these two teams last year. His argument was that UT and FSU were programs that good football players go to, only to be never heard from again.

It takes quite a coach to take a team loaded with talent and make it 4-4.
LOL
I wouldn't call UT "loaded," but in terms of talent, they are surely more talented than either Auburn or Kentucky, two teams with coaches who've done at least as much with less.
